Rich : With all that was said the junk was the stoppage!!

FYI the engine will run without the fuel pump because the fuel will gravity flow - fuel tank is higher than the engine!!

Ah, yes, that makes good sense regarding the studs and saving the gear cover.  Are those wedge studs similar to the one shown below?  Or is it more of a screw-in/LokTite kind-of-thing?

I will follow your advice on the cir-clip/gel application.  I also took your advice from another thread that recommended using a genuine Kubota Hour Meter gasket for mounting the pump; today I picked one up at a local Kubota service/dealer shop.

You've been extremely helpful here, Ken.   Taking the time to share your experience and wisdom is much appreciated -- thank-you.

Cheers,
Richard

It sort of depends on how much you are talking about.  I pretty much always have some steam on my M35 with an Oberdorfer that I installed a while back.  It is a very small amount of wispy steam that looks a bit like what you'll see off hot coffee or tea on a cold day.  In other words, not much.  The engine temp is at 165 and the general temps of the hoses and things I can touch all seem to be in spec, so I have just decided to leave it alone for now.  I still would like to try improving the general flow by removing the 90s off the inlet and outlet of the oberdorfer and actually removing the heat exchanger to have it boiled at a radiator shop (I cleaned it manually with barnacle buster and mechanical clearing while it was in situ).  But... that will be when I can find a "round - tuit" next time I'm out shopping.

There is a foam mesh type "band" that goes around the perforated metal cage inside the silencer.  I bought mine from a local Universal parts dealer in my area.  If you look up the parts catalog for the M35, you'll get a part number for it that you can then order from a supplier.  Mine was completely gone when I got the boat.

As for the breather inlet, I'd suggest using the boss that is there on the intake.  I haven't done mine yet, but that is what I was planning to do.

The engine is running at 160 degrees and I have had that Oberdorfer for long enough to know that it does an adequate job. the day was cooler than usual and very humid but what worried me is that I motored out and back down the channel and when I tied up to the mooring, was still getting the white "steam". and water was coming out of the boat as per usual.

PS:
Remove and deep six the cir-clip that holds the pump shaft.

And dab a bit of TefGel or SuperLube gel on the shaft under the impeller hub to help keep them from getting too familiar with and "attached to" each other.

A handy way to reinstall an impeller is to use a zip tie to compress the blades.

If you pull the shaft, put some gel on the end so it harmlessly passes thru the two lip seals.

Straight from Kubota, the gear cover had studs (the land was for either an optional mechanical hour meter or hydraulic pump on tractors/industrial equipment.)

Universal kept the studs for the Ob pumps and one of the Sw pump models. And removed them for the Sw 903 pump.

The s/s ones were originally meant only to switch from the Sw to Ob pumps (for who had no studs) because I prefer permanent one-and-done vs. screwing in/out of the aluminum gear covers.  Some who have steel studs remove them in favor of the s/s ones - some use just the nylock flange nuts (which eliminates lockwashers.) To get the correct double-ended lengths I had to order "a big bunch" at a time from the UK so I just include a set as a YBYC option.

Note, If you're moving from the 903/908 pump to the N202, you should use 4 instead of 2 fasteners. Also I recommend the Kubota gasket over the Wb/Universal one. It's beefier so it's more likely to survive a pump R&R.

Here's the studs on a gear cover that I refurbished (for a BC guy whose exploding alternator bracket cracked his.)

BTW, if anyone is currently looking for an Oberdorfer N202M-16 in the PNW area, Trotac Marine in Victoria, BC (https://trotac.ca) has two in stock.  Cost is $499 CAN ($363 USD) which is a pretty good price point.

Hey @Ken, thanks much for jumping in on this thread.  Fortunately for me, I scored a N202M-16 from a marine shop about 50 kms (30 mi) from home.  They happened to have three in stock!  As I write, one is on a Purolator truck to my home.

That aside, I do have a related question for you.  I've read in another thread on the forum that someone purchased a pump from you along with four mounting studs and nylon lock nuts.  Can you tell me what the advantage is of that as opposed to using SS hex bolts/split washer/washer combo?

Thanks much.

I took it off the boat and soaked it in Barnacle Busters premixed solution. Cleaned it like new. It says you can use it in place so I added an hour soak to my annual maintenance.
