We had a similar problem with our keel and ended dropping it. The were some serious fiberglass delamination and minor rust streak coming out of it. We documented our work during the process, here's the video if you are interested;

Hope that helps a little bit.

Last year, I had the best time singlehanding in the Sea of Cortez on this boat formerly known as SV Blackdragon. It was such a treat, not having to rush from a place to another and not being on a schedule. For the first time I had the luxury of understanding what it means to ACTUALLY going with the wind. Sailing from anchor to anchor at times. It didn't matter if I was going 2 or 7 knots. In this video I also give some feedback about the Sailrite sails I made.

Let me know what you guys think. I love making those videos and looking forward of making more. Feedback will be greatly appreciated and well received!

If you ever consider switching to a elliptical rudder. I have one for sale  8) PM is you're interested.

Jon W, that rode counter is waterproof isn't?

Here's a photo of the new anchoring setup before splashing

Thanks! I drilled the hole for the new windlass, which was an excessive 1inch a half of solid fibreglass and installed the new Lewmar V3. Upgraded the wiring, fuse and breaker.

I also installed an AutoAnchor chain counter which was pretty tricky to install. Had to run an extra 8 wires from the windlass to the pedestal, thru the 1-inch tubing. Now I can see exactly how much chain/rode is out and control it from the helm. Totally forgot to take pictures before flying to Canada for the Holidays, will back to the boat in Mexico in 2 weeks. Will take a few pictures of the new setup when I'm back. :thumb:

Thinking about putting a mantus swivel on my 5/16 chain and 32lb bruce anchor.  The rep at mantus recommended the S1.
Appreciate any thoughts about the product and size.

I got the S2 Mantus swivel with 5/16 chain and a 45lbs Mantus. I know the website mention that the S1 and S2 would be the proper size for 5/16 chain. I only decided to go with the S2 because we have plans to do extensive cruising, living at anchor every single day and the working load/breaking strength is stronger than the chain. I'm sure it would help to solve your issue, a lot of old school guys will try to tell you they are the weakest link of your chain but that isn't true anymore.

Inside and starting to glass

When I originally purchased SV Blackdragon, it came with a Lewmar v700 windlass that could only accept 1/4 inch chain. In the process of refitting the boat by having the plan to start crossing the South Pacific this Spring. I decided I would need roughly 275 feet of 5/16 and the old Lewmar V700 might not keep up with that. I picked the Lewmar v3 windlass which is definitely oversized but wanted the peace of mind and got a really good deal on it. Also, I thought since the new windlass is a bigger unit, the hole would be bigger. I was wrong!!! I should of doublechecked... I ended getting myself in a bigger project than expected in Mexico where supply where limited and harder to get. The deck was originally roughly 1-inch thick and added an extra 1/4 on top and bottom. For a total of 45 layers of 1708 fibreglass. Here's a few pictures ...
