The WIFI only version of the iPAD does not have any GPS support.  The WIFI / 3G version of the iPAD has GPS using either the cell towers and the GPS satellites. The iPhone 4 has the same arrangement. 
The cool application on the iPhone is Motion X.

Maybe the best solution for the cockpit is an iPad (or even an iPhone) in one of the many water proof bags that are on the market using the internal GPS and one of the many Navigation product (iNavx, Motion X to name just two) that are available for the iPAD/iPhone.   Ray

You should check that the screw holding the engage / disengage level is very tight.  I have found that the auto pilot will disengage when this screw is not very tight so that the level can not move away from the indents that hold it engaged.
