PSS Shaft Seal

I have a PSS shaft seal fitted by the PO. Yesterday, quite by accident, I discovered that when the seal is given a sideways push, water starts to come in (spurting, not dripping) at the transmission end of the seal. In normal operations, I've had no problems at all with the seal.

Is this normal? It seems pretty tender. Should I be tightening the hose clamps or doing something else?

I've read many of the previous posts & the faq entries. There are a quite a few here who are suspicious of the PSS, worrying about a catastrophic leak. My worry is that there is a fault that I don't know how to recognize.

By the way, thanks to those of you who make this such a fabulous resource!

John,It is quite normal for water to gush out with this maneuver.  In fact, it is recommended to do it everytime the boat is hulled out and replaced in the water.  I suspect most yards don't do this, so you need to make certain it is done before motoring any significant distance.  I've had the PSS on two different boats and would not order one without it.
