As so much else has taken a nose dive recently, the noise from the operating shower sump pump has me concerned that it's next in line for failure.

I'm pretty sure it's the original pump, it makes a horrible sound when operating, like a high speed, very loud Tom Tom.

Is there an alternative type of pump available (did not see one on CD)

Both Jabsco and Whale make good substitutes. I have the Jabsco

Noah,
does the jabsco pump run quieter than the original 1987 pump?

I believe so but I barely recall the sound of the original pump, as it has been a 3-4 years since I replaced it. It runs acceptably quiet. Especially since as a shower sump pump, it  doesn't run very long.

Paul : The factory put in a diaphragm pump. You can substitute any rotary pump.

The most important item to use in the shower sump drain is a filter to catch all the junk so it will not clog the one way valve - not letting all the water drain out!!

Ron, do you refer to an inline filter or the drain cap in the floor of the bathroom?

Paul : Look in the Mainsheet tech notes and there is an article on installing a cleanable filter in the shower sump drain line in addition to a one way flow valve.

Saw a Whale Gulper 220 demonstrated @ the Defender Spring warehouse sale with all kinds of material in a clear hose. Looked like several cotton balls in the line and it kept pumping it in the recirculation hose without missing a beat and it was pretty quiet.  The pump needs no filters and claims to have virtually non-choke valves.   I bought it knowing my original sump pump sounds horrible when we use it.   Haven't installed it yet but I may get to it over the next couple of weeks and I'll let you know how it goes.

I have the Whale Gulper kit with the 2 gallon tank. I still have to install it.

Guys : The filter is NOT for the pump, but for the one way valve.  If that valve becomes clogged you cannot clear all of the shower water out and the water in the line will flow back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just finished installing the Whale Pump and it was as straight forward as I could've asked considering the size and shape are very different than the pump it replaced.  It fit on the original plywood plate and worked out very well.   It has a one-way valve much like a joker valve and it is much, much quieter than the one it replaced.  Can still hear it but, quite pleased with the replacement.

Bill....where did you put your tank?

I have the same unit and can't find a place for it besides under the sink if I remove the fridge drain pump.

i installed the pump under sink and toward port in the head where the previous pump was.  I assume it was the original.   it does not have a sump.
It pumps directly from the shower drain.

Bill,

Perhaps it is just terminology, but many of us consider the shower drain to BE a sump because there is a small "sump" (box) right below the drain.  It ius shown  in the boat manual in the plumbing section.
