Greg Sherwood asked me to post this for him:

He needs a timing cover for the front of the engine & they're not made any more.  The only ones he can find are more than twice as much as expected.  Can you ping the owners association & see if anyone might have one?  I know it's a long shot but you can never tell.

Good luck on that guys. You may be best to find a blown Kubota block buy it for parts and rob the timing gear cover.. If you did not listen, for the last 20 years, about the alt bracket upgrade, this lack of parts takes this MUST DO item to the new engine level now...... D'oh..

MS,

Greg has an M25XP with the upgraded bracket which came "standard."  I haven't had a chance to talk to Greg to find out why he's asking.

Yet.

But I'll let you know. :D :D :D

That is interesting!!

It is rumored, and was confirmed for me by Bob B., that not all XP's had the upgraded bracket. Some very early ones apparently still had the old bracket.

The only failures I have seen of the timing gear case have all been from breaking the alt bracket ear off the timing gear case. Course there are obviously other failure modes too but less common than the alt bracket debacle.

Still this means anyone still running the antique bracket is in serious trouble if that ear breaks off. That part has been gone now for a while and supplies are scarce other than used..  Inspected of just replacing a $600.00 part plus a new alt bracket you are likely looking at a new engine.....

Believe it or not there are still a lot of these engines out there where the bracket has not been updated... I still come across about 2-3 per year and have done timing gear cases over the years....

Oh, really?!?

We (you and I and perhaps a few others, maybe, but mainly Ron Hill, Stu Jackson and Maine Sail) have been "preaching" about this for the past 25 years.

One guy on the Ericson board decided he "didn't need to do it" since his hadn't broken.

Stu : If Greg is still interested. Have him contact me, as my old M25XP has an intact timing cover!!

Ron, if your old engine is complete, it is still worth some decent money.  I was surprised how quickly and for how much mine sold.

Apparently my old M25 has a bent connecting rod.
Everything else is good for parts.
Any thoughts on how I could realize any value from the lump ?

Your old lump with a broken connecting rod may be worth more than you think.     I listed my old lump on Craigslist for $1400 and had one buyer interested who never showed up.    Then I told my son he could do whatever he wanted with it and I would give him 20% of the proceeds.    He listed it again for $1200 and somebody was happy to drive 200 miles and cross a border to pay that.

Take some pictures, post it, see what bites.

You might also try a listing on Cruisers Forum.
