feathering prop

One of my winter projects this year will be to replace the 3-blade on our 1988 hull#637. I'm considering the Max Prop. I would appreciate input or previous discussions on feathering props.

I likely will have alot of people disagreeing with me, but to spend that much money to get an extra half knot seems...XXX!!.  I used to own a Valiant 42 and it had a maxprop, before that I had a Morgan 44 with a fixed 3 blade, and now I have a 3 bladed prop on my Catalina 34.  Other than the ability to stop quickly, I don't really notice much of a difference.  Granted, I'm comparing 3 different boats and 2 props, but if you can live with your current boat speed, use the money to buy a diesel heater or A/C or something to make life more comfortable aboard.  For those with folding or feathering props, please forgive my blasphamy. :eek: :eek:

Just wanted you to know that those of us in Southern California don't need no heater or A/C to keep us confortable. We need to spend our money on something! We had crew in shorts for the New Years day race.

I put a flexifold three blade on last season and sailing and powering performance increased tremendously.  Compare with Max and you will be amazed at the price differential.

I second that impression.  I have one on our 34, and even though it is three bladed, it sails as though there in no drag.  Boat will keep up with any of the 34's with a mom/pop crew cruising, not racing.

I am now very happy with my new prop and have seen substantial (.5 kt +) apparent speed improvements in light air (I now seem to pretty consistently do much better than .5x wind speed) and have up to 7 kt cruising speed (at 2600 rpm) and back as I please.
