Mast Access Plate

This kind of ties to my ST 60 problem. Has anyone cut an access into the bottom of their mast to make electrical access possible. I know that some of the old Islanders had one cut in them. Just wondered if any of you have done anything and how you went about it.

Not really an access hole, but the original installer of my old radar drilled a second 1 1/2" or so hole in the front of mast for the radar wires.  It is about an inch above the original hole for the mast wires.  Mine is keel stepped.  No signs of stress cracks or anything.
