On the stern, port side, there's a 1 x 1 piece of wood mounted to the deck.  Way back, outside the rails as I recall.  Wish I had taken a picture.  Maybe it's more like 2 x 2.

What is its function?

I don't think the boat came from the factory with that. I would guess that it's a mounting surface for something the previous owner had muonted on it. Does it have any obvious markings or screw holes showing evidence of something mounted on it?

None at all.  And it does look factory original.  The deck appears to be molded to in a fitting to take the wooden piece.  that is my recollection at least.
