I've heard that urethane is longer-lasting and holds-up better than varnish.  Is there anyone who's used urethane and, if so, do you recommend it?  Has anyone built-up layers of varnish and topped it with urethane or just used several layers of urethane?

thanks,

My preference for all the interior teak is Profin made by Dalys.  It's a teak oil with a low vanish content that is applied as easily as teak oil with a rag but it keeps its newly oiled look for years.  And it can be cleaned off and/or touched up with ease compared to any of the varnishes, natural or synthetic.

Application of Profin is wipe on with a rag or brush on, leave for two to five minutes and wipe off the excess.  One coat is enough but another is so easy to apply two are worthwhile.

By contrast varnish needs at least six to eight coats and absolutely dust-free conditions.  The multitude of coats is necessary to seal the wood pores, without which water will enter the wood and cause the varnish to deteriorate.
