st4000 upgrade

My '86 has an older autohelm st4000 wheel drive kit. the control head is no longer functional. I have seen the newer raymarine flush mount st4000+ control head for sale at several locations. I read somewhere that these units are compatible and that the new head will be compatable with my older drive and fluxgate compass. the old control head has suffered from exposure and until very recently the system was working fine (although the led headings were barely readable). I would like to buy only the controlhead but I'm debating going for the whole new sysytem. I'm wondering if anybody has made this upgrade. thanks, Isabel98
