new exhaust insulation

When I installed a new exhaust, I thought I had enough clearance between the pipe and the bulk head so I omitted the insulating wrap. during our first long "motor" I realized I was wrong. The aft cabin bulkhead was extremely hot. It  couldn't even be touched. When we arrived at our dest. I purchased the wrapping and with much difficulty I wrapped the pipe and used stainless wire to secure it. The heat was much less on the return trip, but I would still consider the bulhead as very hot. Is it normally pretty hot on the bulkhead behind the engine? I wonder how other boats (MK1) operate and is the aft bulkhead hot for everyone.  My engine runs at 180 degrees max. Maybe I should wrap another layer on the pipe. tahnks BD

is98 : The reason for that wrapping is to keep the heat inside that riser exhaust pipe.  
I'd wrap as much as I could as there's only one restriction, as I mentioned in the Mainsheet Tech note article "Dollar Bill Test".
