Main Message Board / Re: Batteries: 2X6V or 6X2v
February 28, 2014, 08:54:34 AM
Thanks guys for your reply.  By posting I was trying to find out if any had looked at the 2V AGM (The ones that I saw at the show where from"lifelinebatteries.com").  I had never looked/heard of the 2V.
Also I added the Ah...my mistake here.
Now I'm inclined for the 6V....and I'm still looking around the best one.
Lifeline's GPL-6CT, 90pounds ea., 30Ah.  4 of them would fit in the bench.  They retail between $350/390 ea.
I'm sure that this price is flexible...I'll let you know of the outcome.

Main Message Board / Batteries: 2X6V or 6X2v
February 26, 2014, 08:22:58 AM
Good day guys.  I need to replace my 2X4d's batteries.  I'm in Florida for the Winter and was at the Miami boat show a few weeks ago.  I was inquiring about what was available for replacement and a sales rep, when I asked about the 6V golf cart batteries.....(2X6V in series) X 2 (parallel).  His answer was why not 6 batteries X 2V in series .......that would give me approx. 660ah X6 for a total of 3960Ah!!!! (Here the manufacturer has 4 different model of 2V so depending of the biggest one that would fit in the bench..the Ah will vary).
None the less it's a lot more Ah than 2X4D (approx. 420Ah total) or 2 banks of 6V in series then parallel (depending of model/brand, approx. 300Ah per battery).
Am I missing something ....and I never heard of this arrangement.
Anyone that has more knowledge than me (almost anyone) can comment on this.
I appreciate in advance.
Ps.:  I have a Solbian solar captor (137W/24V+ regulator) and a Balmar 80Amps alternator with a smart regulator.  My draw is similar to every boat  + I have a Dometic Freezer that draws approx. 3.5Ah

A friend of mine had the same problem so he did install a piece of wood underneath the table (when the table is out of service that piece of wood is not seeable - against the pedestrial).  The piece of wood is drilled(in the center) and then screwed (only one screw) on the edge of the central part of the table.....so now that piece can pivot underneath the wing and support it.   You can have it the way you prefer meaning a long piece of wood that wood support both wings in one shot (but her you are limited to opening both wings at the same time), or 2 small one on either side or, of course one on each side.

It works good for my friend.

good luck

Tim I had a similar problem a few years ago and posted this back then:  http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4467.0.html

Also I did find that the fresh water overflow ( in our ancor pit) was also dripping.  By putting this "shower curtain"...any water fore of it would go directly to the bilge.
Hope it helps

Good day guys!!!  I've just pulled the boat out of the water for it's Winter rest and the owner of a Catalina 36 (with in-mast) was asking me about my way of preventing the banging Inside the mast when the main is removed...so I tought that there might be a few new guys on the forum that doesn't know about my way......there's alsoother way but I just love mine.....

Along with the panel (other post) here's the way that it was connected via an ACR.  In the installation instructions/diagram it shows a fuse on both sides....so I went with 2 X 100A fuse/block using no 4 elect cable.  The power from the controler (turning the 24V into 12V) is wired (again 10A fuse) directly to main switch  positive C (off-1-both-2 switch).  Again I'll let you guys know how it work out.

The panel installed and connected.  One pic has the cable showing and the other covered with this plastic wrap.

Here's a picture showing the cable comming out of the ''ear'' of the bimini.  The cable run along the backstay and then enters the boat.  You'll also notice the other half of the velcro waiting for the panel

Main Message Board / Solbian Solar panel 137W/24V

Guys I tought that you might like what this panel looks like installed.   It's approx 22''X60'', 1/4'' thick and a full 4lbs.  It was installed last w-e using velcro (it's hard to see as it's white).

In 2 weeks, retirement and will spend lots of time on the boat so I'll report on how efficient this panel is.

Thanks so much..great help!!!  It looks like I'm going to go with the Bleue Sea System ACR.  I've got a lot to read before the w-end.  I'll take some pictures of the installation (including the panel mounted on the bimini) and tell you how I finally connected everthing.

Again thanks  a million  :clap

SPECS:  Solbian flexible -1/8'' thick - about 4lbs - 22''X59'') velcroed on my bimini,137W, 24V.
I've got this Off, One, both & Two batterie selector.

The panel will be installed next w-e.  I've run the cable from the top of the bimini, goes down along side with the backstay, enter the boat near the A/C shore power plug....all the way to the controler (Genasun GV-10) located in the batteries compartment (2-4D, no starting bat).  From the controler I've got 2 fused pigtails going to my 1ST bat (+ & -).  The neg of both bat are linked together so this is not a problem.

Now the real question is  that if I connect the Pos pigtail from the controler to the Pos of that batterie 1 ...the panel will be charging only that batterie...Right?
Now if I move the batteries selector switch to Both.....will I be charging both batteries? (meaning the solar panel output, to the controler, to the batt One...then to the selector and back to batt Two)
Obviously if I move the selector to Two...then no charging from the panel....only number One will  be charged.

Since I'm far from having enough electrical knowledge to know if this will work I'd appreciate any comments.

By the way, my CDN vendor is of no help...is answer was to go on the internet....

Thanks in advance.

Hi
I have the Helmseat, its confortable and I am very happy with it.  Granted it's a tight fit but if I know that I'll be behind the Wheel for a long time then I retreive it from the aft room.
It's removable in a jiffy...2 wing nuts (they lock in place so you don't have to worry about loosing them).  Since it attach to the 2 sides of the balcony the ladder is still functional but you can't get thru unless you remove the seat.
If anyone decide to order this seat I recommend that you get it with the long legs (that's what I've done) since I don't use the Catalina supplied seat because I find that it always rubbing against the bottom of you leg.  After a while you might decide to shorten the leg...so all you have to do is cut them...and the seat cost you the same with either legs lenght.
It give you a good view and even Under sail I can use it..with a foot on the side to stop me from sliding.  It come with a sunbrela cover and a small cup for your drink.

Main Message Board / Pressure Post

Guys, my mast is deck step and I would like to know, ounce the mast is removed, if the Inside pressure post is removable.  I've tried adding another cable for the TV antenna and I might have damaged some wires so I'd like to remove it and change those wires.   The opening at the base of the post is very very small....it's just big enough for the factory installed accesories but no room to add anything.
Thanks in advance.

I just purchased a 12V TV and antenna (with a 12V boster).  They sold me a RG-9 cable!!!  I haven't installed it yet but I tried it on the kitchen table (with a 110 to 12V converter) and I got 3 chanel w/o it and 12 cristal clear with the boster.
You could try google and you'll get all the information you need on the various cables available and you'll find your answer.
Good luck and when installed I'll let you guys know how it perform.

Hi Mick...I don't have the information on the installation of the cleats you may install but I'd be carefull about the constant rubbing of the lines on your seat.  I'd put them where it's impossbile for the rope to rub....before drilling I would try a few spots...and see if it's ok.  I'm sure that a backing plate wouldn't hurt ..more so if you might attach an anchor to them!!!!   That plate can be of any cutoff you might have (if possible SS), the look and shape is not important...you just predrill on your work beach before...then it's just the matter of crawling in...but you'd have to anyway to install the nuts.
Good luck and if you do install them...a picture or 2 is always welcome.
