Paul : We had the similar problem with a friends cutless bearing replacement.  As soon as we heard the first crack we stopped, used a torch like you did and finally got the old cutless to come out.
We finally figured out that the last time that bearing was replace some "knob-head" had used locktite on that pressed in bearing.

We found that there was enough glass and mat in that area that the one fine crack was on the surface.

On the subject of the "contraption" it would be fine and safe for the boat if you add a pipe diameter large enough to accommodate bearing and resting on the strut aft surface.

My question is, how much does one save compared to using a proper tool, and is it really worth it?

Twenty years from now you'll be more disappointed by the things you didn't do, than by the ones you did.
So throw off the bowlines.  Sail away from the safe harbor.  Catch the tradewinds in your sails.
