That's what both Grohe and the plumbing outlet where I bought the old style said.

The cartridge is a very nice piece of engineering with o-rings inside and outside. I guessed that the ceramic feature replaced the o-rings internal to the valve since they have kept the external o-ring that seals to the faucet body. My budget is too tight to buy one and check it out.
