RUDDER POST PACKING GLAND

In all the discussions about rudders, rudder posts and the rudder packing gland, I have not read about maintaining the gland. It would seem not to be a good idea to let that seal fail.  Is this not a problem or what could/should be done as preventative maintenance. A search of the technical notes did not address this topic.
