Dutchman topping lift options

I recently ordered a new Main, to be built with the Dutchman flaking system components.

I currently have the OEM topping lift so I need to change that to accomodate the Dutchman.

In the Dutchman documentation, they list System A which uses the Halyard type topping lift, and System B which uses a continuous toppping lift line.

System A looks to be the easiest to set up and probably not require a trip up the mast.  For System B, is there a way to use the current masthead sheeve or does it require a new block to be installed on the masthead?

What I would like to know is the advantages and disadvantages of each system and which system folks have used?

Thanks

Roland,
Neither should require a trip up the mast. I have the continuous line system on my C34 and love it. The continuous line is connected to the original topping lift with a swivel. You end up with a  lot of topping lift line in the line bag, but it makes it very easy to  drop the Dutchmen system at the end of the season and for maintenance.

I would recommend the continuous line system over a static system. I snug the Dutchmen with its cam cleat before dropping sail and the sail flakes on the boom. Takes some time to train the sail, but easily flaked at the dock when under control. When the sail is up I loosen the Dutchman the same as I would the topping lift which eliminates the chafe and allows for good sail shape.

The monofilament can last from 1-3 years dependent on use. When you need more just get it at a hardware for pennies on the dollar compared to ordering it as a part from Dutchman. It is just monofilament after all.

As in most things on a boat some people love the system and some hate it. Much the same as any other control system. Good luck

Roland   My  original  topping lift was a fixed cable not a halyard. I had to go up the mast to attach the new topping lift. Charlie

Our boat came with a dutchman.  It's type A.  I just had to replace the lines, bought some 400# mono off ebay for cheap.

There's times when it messes with my sail shape.  Most of the time it can be fixed with trim.  It's nice to be able to just go head2wind and then blow the main halyard and let it come down flakes and good to go.
