Boom work - any drawings or sketches?

I took my boom off the boat (1989tall rig) when I winterized because the outhaul didn't work - it would only move an inch or so.  Got both ends off the boom and found the block arrangement to be okay.  The forward and aft shives were a little worn but nothing that appeared to the eye to be jambing it.  Don't understand what was binding it??? Did notice several blocks inside the boom where the connection pins or rivets corroded thru and they weren't properly attached....none were being used....brings me to my point - does anyone have any sketches on how the boom was rigged from the factory?  I have a boom kicker so I don't have a topping lift and I reef on the outside of the boom (still haven't gotten it down to where I can do it from the cockpit) but there are many more blocks inside and slots for lines on the boom than just for a missing topping lift.  Any assistance is appreciated.

Chris - I think the copy of the owners manual on the website shows the typical setup for Mark 1 boats. (http://www.c34.org/manuals/1988/1988-C34-Owners.pdf  pg.27) My 1991 boom extrusion doesn't have any separate paths inside the boom or intermediate exits. I replaced my sheaves with Harken ball bearing versions. I still need to re-open my boom this weekend to see why my outhaul is binding again. I suspect it's twisted.

chris, i rebuilt my outhaul last season using tom sokoloski c36 setup but i went 3:1 instead of 5:1. got new shieves from catalina direct and new blocks from garhauer, #20 series. works great, only mistake was i got 20' 0f 1/4" line, should have got 30'. will replace next spring.when reinstalling end caps and screws, use a little never-seeze compound...jeff

Chris : If you look in the old Mainsheet Tech notes (about 1996) or in your owners manual; there is a diagram of the "innards" of the Mk I boom.  Great info in those tech notes. 
I published that because that page in the owners manual was missing in the 1988 version!

Chris,
Must be the season.  My boom is also apart for stuck outhaul repair.  I lived with it all summer, and am glad to get this done.  Mine was all twisted up as expected, but all the blocks and wire seem OK, so I am replacing only the line but keeping the block setup as built.  I tried to think up a way to prevent it from twisting again, but no ideas.  (Suggestions anyone?).  The Catalina manual states the outhaul line is 1/4" Dacron.   I bought Staset (Polyester) - wonder if this will help or hurt.   Will coat the end caps and screws with Lanolin for corrosion protection, as I suspect I'll be back in there.  As far as extra blocks inside, mine did not have them.

Larger blocks will help with the twisting problem (or so they have for me).  I upgraded to a 5:1 purchase, which is a big improvement over the original (at least in my 1990) 3:1 purchase.  Someone on the C36 board went to 16:1 and at the time I thought it was overkill, but now I wish I had done it.

Chris : When I took my boom apart back in 1999?, I replaced the non swiveling with a swiveling block and some lubrication.  Kept the same line and all is well since.

We replaced the two single blocks with Harken triple blocks.  The extra purchase is great with our loose footed main.  Since we had the boom apart, we replaced both of the sheaves as well.
