I have never mounted my second fire extinguisher. Have one vertical, under the nav station. I could use some suggestions for the second unit.

We keep our second one in the aft cabin.  Others keep either their second or a third one in the forward cabin.  Some have another one in the port locker.  Our port locker means outside in the cockpit, not the nav station former (for us) hanging locker.

We keep three extinguishers on board. on mounted under the compaionway ladder so it is close to the
motor. One inside aft and one indide the V berth. Both are mounted to the bulkhead for easy grab in case one needs to escape from the cabin and get to the fire to extinguish.

I have three - V-berth, just under the companionway locker, and port locker.  The last is very important... so you are cruising along and something below sparks up.  You and the crew are in the cockpit.  Nice to have something handy.

Larry,
Thanks for the thought about one handy from the cockpit . I had not thought of that one and will be adding one this spring. Its now on the spring shopping list.

Phil : I have 4 extinguishers on-board:
1. In the port side lazerette - if I have to fight a fire to get below/or cockpit fire
2. large one mounted under the 3rd (from the bottom) companion way steps
3. medium one under a book/document case near the nav table
4. small one just behind the stove

On the underside of the cabin deck there's a smoke alarm (with a light) and under the bottom step is a carbon momoxide detector.
The smoke alarm sounded when an EMPTY pan was placed back on lite burner burner.  In that one instance it paid for itself!!!!    :thumb:

Hey, and don't forget the one in the V-berth.  Not a real happy night if you wake up and have to do the dance through flames of hel! to get to safety.

My surveyor said to have one in the aft cabin because it's a sleeping cabin with only one exit.  The V-berth has two (you can go out the hatch).  FWIW

Mine are:
1.  Larger extinguisher in port lazerette (engine fires, fire off boat).
2.  Extinguisher at entrance to aft cabin, mounted low next to the engine inspection hatch (aft cabin, galley, engine fire)
3.  Halon extinguisher in bathroom, forward wall next to head (galley, electrical panel)
4.  Port forward settee behind cushion (v-berth).

To be Coast Guard approved they must be mounted.

Traditional chemical extinguishers are very corrosive and will ruin electronics.  Halon is no longer supplied but there may be alternatives.  Don't forget to periodically inspect for charge.  In addition to checking the pressure guage shake it to make sure the powder isn't packed.

Thanks to all for the many suggestions. I am watching for a good sale & will get 2 more extinguishers so I have 4. Like the suggestions about one in the cockpit locker.
