Guys : If you have a vented loop on a suction line with water - you will only suck AIR and no water!!! 
On a pressured/push line the water will flow thru and when the flow stops (water not flowing) the vented loop will let air into that line and break the flow so it cannot syphon!!  Fluids Engineering 101

A vented loop is also called an anti syphon valve [/b]!!! :thumb:

So on the head plumbing on any sailboat, the vented loop is on the water line from the pump (hand/electric) into the bowl !!!!!
