For what it's worth, I used a trick to replace the compass diaphram on my previous boat that might be of some use.  The factory wanted me to send the bulkhead mounted compass in to replace the diaphram, saying a backyard mechanic wouldn't be able to get all the air out.  I said I'd like to give it a try.  Their advice was to put the replacement fluid in the freezer along with the compass before doing the change.  I came up with a better idea.  I taped a piece of thread to the back of the diaphram after installation.  I poured the fluid in until the compass was full, then pulled on the thread and poured some more in.  As I put in the filler cap, I let the diaphram relax, squeezing fluid and any air bubbles out as I tightened the cap.  No air bubbles.  No shipping and handling charge with the factory. :)  Hope this is usefull.
