It's a great idea to get your boat inspected once a year. The USCG Auxillary will do it for free. Many Yacht Clubs sponsor it as an annual event. After successful completion a sticker is placed on your mast. This sticker will stop most on the water random inspections.

If you have the bad fortune of needing CG assistance, a safety inspection will be conducted. It's a good idea to go over the checklist annually to ensure everything will still pass. Expired flares is most common failure item.
