General

The purpose of a stuffing box is to keep water from entering the boat thru the hole that a shaft (prop, rudder) exits the boat. Which is better, a traditional stuffing box or a dripless replacement?

It is possible to repacking the stuffing box while in the water. After unscrewing the packing nut from the shaft log, wrap a rag or strip of cloth around the shaft. Snug it up against the open shaft log and secure with a hose clamp or ziptie. Any water that enters the boat will be easily handled by the bilge pump.
