Engine has two seperate cooling systems. The internal system uses pumps a 50% antifreeze solution through the engine, hot water heater and heat exchanger to cool the engine. It also pumps raw sea water through the heat exchanger to cool the antifreeze mixture. The two systems share the heat exchanger but do not mix.

The thermostat controls the flow of internal water through the engine. The engine is more efficient when at the proper temperature. The thermostat regulates this.
