I had access to a program that predicts theoretical boat speed for various wind conditions. I wanted to compare the fin keel polar that is in the FAQ with a polar for a shoal (wing) keel. POLAR DIAGRAM FOR SHOAL DRAFT KEEL, MKI
by Ken Juul
I had access to a program that predicts theoretical boat speed for various wind conditions. I wanted to compare the fin keel polar that is in the FAQ with a polar for a shoal (wing) keel. The wing has more wetted area so it is a bit slower but the angles are about the same. There is a difference in best downwind heading, think that is more a function of the program than the keel.
Here are the polars for the older boats.
