On my Catalina 30 (and I plan to do the same thing with my "new" 34), I have a handheld VHF at the helm.  I am sure I do not have the range of my full VHF, but it works fine for my needs.  As a bonus, I can take it ashore with me and keep in touch with the mother ship.  I belive I got it on sale for approx. $125.

Just anothet option.
