Some time ago there was a discussion on replacing rub rails. I replaced mine last year and it was not fun until I found the right tool.  For some unknown reason I had in my tool box a "cotter pin remover" made by Globemaster.  It is about 6' long and has a thin marlin spike on one end and has a slight s-curve to a flat end about 5/8" wide.  With the marlin spike end, you can guide the top of the rail into the track and tap it into place with a rubber mallet. It helps to have a mate on top to hold the rail and apply heat from a hair dryer if necessary.  After using this tool the job was easily completed. I don't recall where I purchased it, either an automotive or hardware store.
