Can anyone suggest a source for the foam band that covers the air filter on my Universal M25XP?  Surely there is a less expensive source than Torrenson!  Is this something that NAPA carries and is so, do we have a part number?

I also noticed that there is an aluminum element inside the air filter. It appears to be clean. Does is require cleaning and/or replacing?

Thanks

Bill,
You are correct about getting the foam air filter element at NAPA.  It is part #7-02278.  Only costs a few bucks.  From NAPA it comes a little too wide (tall?), but it is easily trimmed with a scissors.

Bill : The foam band around the air filter is a noise suppressor.  As I've written in posts and in the Mainsheet, you can go to a fabric store and for 99 cents buy enough 1/2" foam to last a lifetime.
Cut it to size.  Somewhat a "bear" to sew on a machine, but I've made a number of them.

After reading this post I decided to checkout and clean the filter on my 1990 C34. It had the ~3inch can filter with the metal foil material. When I opened it I noticed the the metal foil had started to break down and if it hadn't been for the screen on the bottom would have been sucked into the engine. I have changed to the K&N filter referenced in this post. I don't like the idea of metal particles in the engine

Steve : You are the second or third person that has mentioned that the "aluminum shavings" inside your air cleaner are breaking down.
I've clean mine once a year by taking the packed "shavings" and cleaning them in acetone.  They are in good shape.
I do NOT have the oil pan breather venting into the air cleaner.  My breather goes into a separate home made filter (see Mainsheet and Projects).

Wonder if the air from the oil pan is corrosive and breaking down those shavings.  Interesting!!!!  :?: [/b]

I too have switched to the K&N filter, a little pricy but will last the life of the engine. no worries  :D

Steve & Ohana,

What is the K&N filter that fits the 25XP engine? How much does it cost?
Do you notice any more noise running the K&N ?

For the 25XP, I used the K&N RU-2450 filter assembly. Price was about $35 with shipping from the K&N website.

Didn't notice any change in the engine induction noise.
