Well since the weather has warmed up a bit I have been able to start working on my long list of things to get done. I have read most of the info on this forum and of course u tube, but sometimes you get 5 different videos on the same thing. So my Question is I am going to spend the money to have the bottom of my boat soda blasted, If the boat is only in fresh water is the only thing needed is the NC17? Or do I need a barrier coat primer first.
Or would it be best to use a bottom paint and does that need the barrier coat primer first?

On a 1987 polyester resin hull I would recommend a good epoxy barrier coat under the bottom paint.

Dan : There is NO substitute for a good barrier coat - even in fresh water!!  Follow Noah's advice!!!

I also say do a generous barrier coat.  Will help the bottom paint from flaking off over the winter, out of the water, storage.  I would also recommend you give some thought to the water line, very good to have the barrier coat and bottom paint a couple of inches above the water line. 
Now a rant.  VC-17 red bottom paint won't be available for at least a month.  Interlux just isn't making it till then, if they ever do. When I contacted the company, response was, tough ##$@, use a different color.    I'm not very happy.  Wish it were simple to just change paint brand, it's not.  I've decided to touch up, make do and deal with it next season.  Will get bottom paint in plenty of time.

Jim--I second your rant on red VC-17 bottom paint.  I've occasionally skipped a year with no noticeable decrease in performance and will again this year.  Hopefully red will return next year.
