recommendations for boat yard near Solomon MD
« on: October 20, 2021, 12:33:53 PM »

My friend is in the process of buying a Catalina 387 located at Spring Cove Marina, Solomon MD.  They want about $2,000 to unstep the mast and load boat on a transport trailer.  He is looking around the area, a half day sail or so, for better pricing.  Told him I'd ask here, or does that sound like a reasonable rate for that area.  That would be very high in Erie.
Thanks,
Jim

Check Zahnisers likely best marina in Solomon's, go from there. Solomon's Is a good place to be, you could do a lot worst.  If he does not like that price call around Annapolis, will make him feel better.  Plus Solomon's is a good location for hauling a boat is close to major highways verse being on the other side of the bay. Good Luck

2k is a reasonable price for de-rig and truck load.  I've intentionally forgotten what the exact number I paid when I had mine shipped about a year ago, but it was more than that.

that seems a little pricey.  in NJ, i did the same thing to a C34 a few years ago and paid less then $1k to the marina to unstep and load.  but the devil might be in the details.  literally all the marina did was remove the mast and load it and the boat on the trailer.  i took care of prepping the boat and wrapping cords round the mast to keep the rigging secure.

There are a number of full service marinaís in the Solomons area, so your friend should call around for quotes. It used to be that most yards in the area would post their rates on their website, but Iíve noticed many places have taken their work order forms down. Since COVID, the marine service industry in the middle Chesapeake Bay has experienced huge demand, so if you need work done ASAP, the yards are going to charge premium prices - especially if they are busy and they know you wonít be a returning customer. So I suspect 2K is the going rate unfortunately. To find cheaper marina services, probably need to go to Virginia.
