Hello Everyone! Joined The Club!
« on: August 03, 2021, 12:16:10 PM »

Hi All,

Greetings from England! Weíre hoping to become owners of a pre-loved 2006 Catalina 34 Mk2 very soon. She looks great and has obviously been well looked after. She comes with Leisurefurl in-boom furling and a bow thruster. However, hereís a small amount of rusty water in the bilge which Iím hoping wonít be a sign of anything serious.

Iíve been lurking for a while reading everything I can but Iím still not completely sure what Catalina-specific items I should point our surveyor at.

The forumís Critical Upgrades seem to apply to older boats. The Ďsmileí is obviously a check item, but what else should I specifically look for?

Thank you,

Graham

Graham : Hopefully we will be welcoming you on board as an owner in the near future!!

The only item that I can think of is to make sure that the emergency till will fit into the slot on the rudder.  Remove the cap and make sure they align (hole in deck & slot).

At one time (long ago) there was a Westerbeke bulletin on the throw adjustment for the M35BC engine transmission shifting arm.  I believe that has all been fixed??

A few thoughts

Graham,
Hope to welcome you to the group soon.
I have a 2001 and as Ron noted not much to check on.  On my 2001 was a couple of Westerbeke bulletins, one dealing with the fuel filter bracket, cracking at a too small radius bend and one dealing with a reinforcing sleeve added to the raw water pump drive tang.  Don't think they are addressed on this site but on the Westerbeke site.
Regards,
Jim

Thanks guys. Yeah a bow thruster, electric winch, luxury mattresses, in boom furling, heating. The current owner (hopefully soon to be previous owner) certainly didnít want to rough it! My kinda person.

I read something about a potential leak near some waste pipe vent, near the chain plates?? Does that apply to later models?

Graham,

Welcome, all the best for a smooth sale.

Anytime there is a stanchion base used for venting there is the possibility of a leak.  On our boats that stanchion is also the one normally used by people who get on the boat and grab it, further exacerbating potential leaks at the base of that stanchion.

It is something to check and is easily repairable by rebedding the stanchion.  In addition, skippers have removed the stanchion vent and replaced it with a midships vent high up on the hull.

I'm sure others will find that link for you, I'm heading out to my boat for the day.  If no one has posted it when I get back I'll find it for you.  It could be in the 101 Topics, take a look.

Yes, it's in the 101 Topics part of the plumbing group of topics:

Second Holding Tank Vent
http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,6861.15.html

Lots of photos!

You can look in the C34 MkII manual in the tech wiki to see how the vents were run OEM.  All the Mark I to 1 1/2 boats used the stanchions.  I doubt Catalina changed it for the Mark IIs, but I personally haven't looked.  Could be a fun journey...  :D  I'm between books!  :D

I did look into the manual.

Page 43 has the diagram of the boat plumbing.

It shows the holding tank vent line as "vent hose to stanchion."
