Finding the waterline

I would like to accurately establish how far above or below the waterline the engine raw water outflow joins the exhaust riser in the engine room on the MK II with the M35BC. There must be a simple way to do this that is less trouble than attaching a clear hose to the raw water intake and observing how high the water column rises inside the hose. Any suggestions?

Also, by rough measurement I estimate the capacity of the M35BC aqua lift muffler to be about 12 litres. Has anyone actually done a more accurate measurement?

My drain hose coming from the head sink is clear when initiall installed & I marked the water level.

Next time at boat I will take a pic & post.

I think the water line level is below the water input at the nipple on the exhaust riser but it is close.

Ed & Greg : FYI, the C34 MKII has a completely different muffler setup with their 4 cylinder M35 BC engine, than your MKI.

Thanks for the replies. I guess you there's no easy way so I'll just start drilling holes in the hull until water comes in. Photos to follow. 😬😬😬

John : Let us know why you need to know that water line level in comparison to the output of the HX???  I'd guess that your column of water is better than drilling holes in the hull to find that level!!

Also your 12 liters may be total capacity, but I believe there are 2 levels - one with the engine running and one level when the engine isn't running.  I also guess that the exhaust hose from the MKII muffler to the exit on the hull is long, but less than the much longer MKI exhaust hose.  Again just wondering what you are looking to do with that data?

A few questions and thoughts  :think

17' from where it comes out of the muffler or whatever it is under the sink in the head? Also is it 1-5/8" id?

The white box under the head sink is the muffler.

Yes, 17 feet from there to the transom thru hull.

Yes, 1 5/8" I. D.

waterline -Any suggestions?

muffler - about 12 litres.

John, you could simply take the seawater pump inlet hose off (or sink drain hose) and see at what height seawater just starts to overtop the hose end.

I think the muffler is closer to 13L, but that's from measurements not from putting water into it.  Why do you want to know that volume?

So that I could sort out which, if any, off the shelf mufflers might be used as a replacement if my original muffler gave up the ghost.

All moot, I'm afraid. We recently trade Calypso in as part of the purchase of a Ranger Tug. While we miss the sailing, motoring along at 8 knots in our shirtsleeves in the always cool and often rainy Pacific Northwest is proving to be a real treat. Calypso is in the good hands of Jim and Allison Lucas who, ironically, are moving from a powerboat to sail. I hope they become active members of the Association.

Finally, thanks to all of the active members of this list for your informative analysis, ideas, and even sympathy as we worked together to keep these fine yachts in great shape. It's the best boating list in the world and I feel privileged to have been a member for over 16 years. Give the MV Surprise a wave if you see us out there. I guarantee no peace threatening wakes!

John,
This forum may not be the right place, certainly not this thread, but I would be interested in your views after your switch to the "dark side".  Possibly others would also.  What size Ranger Tug do you have, how does it compare to C34, storage and comfort especially underway in a rough seaway?
My apologies to anyone who thinks I'm out of line.

Happy to start the conversation you suggest Jim. I'll marshal my thoughts and post in a new thread. I'm sure that other Catalina 34 owners have made a move like this, or are at least thinking about it.
