Main Message Board / Re: Davits

I have davits on my boat. They are great for hauling the dinghy. I have had a bauer 8', a walker bay with tubes and now an avon air 10. All ride great on them. I can easily see over the boat. Much less drag, much less. Especially motoring in the IC no towed boat to watch and a knot more speed at least.
Only problem is my 1988 has a reverse transom and hauling the ding up over the first 2 feet is tough. After that it is easy.

I would also like to know the names of some of the people in the photos so I could identify them . As a west coast (sort of member) I guess.

I have my dinghy on davits so sailing I just tie the spare 2.5 gl tank inside the dinghy. When anchored or using the ding I can tie it on the deck forward.

Main Message Board / Re: Memory Foam Matress Topper
August 01, 2013, 08:43:20 AM
we used memory foam for a few years and it was comfortable but deteriorated over time. Maybe because of the hot climate in SW Florida. So we ordered a tufted topper. It is ok but the memory foam was softer and more like our bed at home. we cut ours (ordered on line from overstock.com) with scissors.

my macerator went out yesterday while I was testing it. It was a jobsco and rarely used. I went to West Marine and they make a replacement mascerator under their name.. I think about $140.00 (less than jobsco and Surflo)  Replaced the other unit easily. Not a pleaseant job in the bottom of the boat in 90+ heat and Florida humidity. .

I installed a 40 A truecharge 2 a few years ago  (4 or 5) and it has worked very well for me. Before that i went through severl other chargers.  I keep the boat in the water year round and keep the frig on. I bought trucharge 2 because of ratings on this board. It has been good to me.

i replaced this thru hull last year on my 1988. It was taking water in the boat when hard on the wind. The hole would be in the water (wake) and water would come in. Took a long time for me to find out where the water was coming from. After I replaced  this I am bone dry again.
(I posted this earlier but I had a bucket or two of water in the v after a long days sail)

Main Message Board / Re: Raw Water Pump Gasket
February 22, 2013, 05:58:33 PM
on the original impeller *(BLACK) there is a little fabric type washer that seats into each side. The globe impeller (BLUE) has a recessed place on each side but the washers did not fit into them. (they were just a bit too small). there was no slippage and they fit well on the shaft. Are the gl;obe impellers ok to use without this? Also there is no gasket on the newer orbendorfer pump.there is a rubbber ring seal on the face. I hope this clears this up.

I canged the impeller on my Orbendorfer pump last week. I had ordered a globe impeller (the blue one) awhile ago and was going to put that on. However, the two fabric type washers that press into both sides of the impeller on the shaft would not fit into the recessed holes on the side of the globe impeller. They were too big. So I had an original impeller and used that one.
Incidently, I thought that the impeller was faulty because I was not gettimg much water out the exhaust. This did not fix things. I then checked the intake and the filter and they were good and flowing. then I took off the hose leading from the heat exchanger out. The exit hole was plugged. A screwdriver popped the material free when recommected the water freely came out the exhaust. Looked like salt and or calcium buildup. Whatever it crumbled and flowed out the exhaust.

Main Message Board / Re: Jib/genoa size

I have a 130 I use in the winter when we get more gusty wind in SW Florida. Then in the smmer we drift along with the 150. Both are on and off the profurl and I can furl in some sail as needed. in 25+ winds. we always reef the main then roll in the jib to suit. WE some times get down to just the size of a handkerchief.

I had my shoulder redone 14 months ago. Yes it was a sailing accident a few years ago and i tried to "work it out" for about 2 years. By the time i went under the knife I had really messed it up by accumulating a couple more torn muscles. I had to stay off the sailboat for 9 months and had lots of therapy. I am,I guess, well now but the shoulder snaps and pops a lot. I hope and pray you have a lot more success than I. Remember, take it easy. Terry

Main Message Board / Re: Wing Keels vs. Fin Keels
November 24, 2012, 05:26:51 AM
Here in florida the wing keels are most popular. It allows sailing along the western coast and the keys and the bahamas and out to the islands. So here you pay a premilum for the wing keels. I have one and love it.  I had sailed and owned centerboard boats for years amd the wing is very sturdy and sits up well in a blow. Don't think if you buy one you are sacrificing sailing ability. Unless you are racing you will probably not notice a difference.

In Naples Fl this morning we are getting 30 to 35 mpg gusts. windy but thank goodness not close enough to require stripping the boat again.
