I had the same problem with the M35 on my 2002, eventually it would not start. A replacement fuel lift pump solved the problem and it has not returned. The tank was full and there was no fuel in the line at the pump. My engine would not run with a faulty fuel lift pump.

I have been using VC-17 for at least 20 years now VC-17 Extra. I use 4 quarts, including under the wing keel and cradle pads. I use a roller tray and a 7" fine roller (mohair?) Just finished for this year. Works for me.

Have taken our full size bikes on many trips.Wheels tied against the SS handrails on deck, Handlebars aft. Lines tied from toe rail cleats to bike, then lines tied between bikes. Shock cords also between bikes. No problems tacking or in moderately rough weather. Works for me on a MK 11

Steve,
Not sure I understand. My MK2 has the mainsheet on both sides and is anchored by a simple push down jam cleat. I keep the mainsheet on the starboard winch, no cam cleat used. When necessary to use the winch, not often, I just push the mainsheet onto the jam cleat. I believe this is how the rigging is shown in the owners manual and is how I have also seen on other MK2's. Hope this helps.

Saw All is Lost last night and agree with all of the above. However the most illogical incident was when Redford's radio revived and he used it to call "SOS" repeatedly. You would think that any knowlegable sailor would know that the International :clap Distress signal is "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday"

We went out to dinner afterwards and the group discussed and noted the above and many more discrepancies, making for lively conversation. That said we enjoyed the film. Too bad the filmakers did not have a consultant from the Catalina 34 Forum!

A 2002 A/B system (now owned by Dometic) runs on R134A refrigerant, not freon. R134A is widely available in auto supply stores, however recharging the A/B is tricky, it uses a very small amount at low pressure. A new evaporator will not connect to the 2002 compressor, but a special connection kit will enable this connection. Check Defender Marine for replacement evaporator and connection kit.
To me, the biggest problem in replacing the evaporator is that the copper tubing has a very long run thru a pvc conduit between the evaporator and compressor, the path is not obvious. I would recommend having a professional refrigeration tech, not boatyard guy, visit determine if the aluminum can be repaired and then the system recharged.

Kyle,
ZF transmissions are available at a good price from Harbor Marine in Evertt , WA. Google Harbor Marine.
They apparently also sell new transmissions on Ebay as Hotrodspee

Google ZF-10 transmission

Good luck!

I had a similar problem with my 2002 MK2. Engine would start and run good but sometimes slow down during extended motoring, from 2,600-2,800 to 2,000 rpm. Would continue to run @ 2,000; next time we used the boat all was fine. I too changed all filters several times.

Long story short, finally the engine would not start and a new fuel lift pump immediately resolved the problem for me. Believe this is a MK-2 issue, if you have a similar problem on a MK-2 suspect the fuel lift pump.

Jim, sorry but I do not have any useful photos of the mainsail. It works just fine reefed. The sail was from the Doyle Chicago loft 312-421-9900. Owner of the loft is John Baxter.
Hope this helps.

I was very unhappy with the original Catalina roller furling mainsail that came with the 2002 C34 that I purchased in 2006. I bought a new Doyle roller furling main with 4 vertical battens for the 2007 season. The sail has been good, greater sail area, no sag or fluttering in the leach. I have had no problems with battens while furling.

Before building the new sail, Doyle came to the boat and inspected the Charleson Spars mast and determined that it was suitable for vertical battens. They also installed the sail and confirmed it worked well on a test sail. This sail is now in it's 6th season with no problems.

I had this same problem with my M-35, did most of the same fixes. Finally my electric fuel lift pump failed, engine would not start. I replaced it and engine runs at 2,800 all day. Symptoms were exactly the same, start well, run good for some time, then 2,200 max.

Others on this forum will say the 34 will run fine without the lift pump, but mine would not. When the pump was disconnected there was no fuel in the line from the tank. My boat is a 2002 MK 2, your configuration may differ.

After careful testing and telephone discussion with Dometic CS (now owns A/B) I replaced the electronic module on my 2002 refrigeration system with no change. Fan ran, no flashing LED and still no cooling.

After reading the Kollman Marine site, I disconnected the fan and found that the Danfoss compressor was actually running. It was virtually silent and vibration free. So I changed my diagnosis, went to AutoZone and bought an inexpensive R34a charging kit with a guage. My A/B came from the factory with R134a refrigerant but the fittings were for R12 (Freon) and an inexpensive adapter was needed.

I charged the low side to 10 lbs; the system immediately started working and after 10 days is still working well even though it has been over 100 degrees for 3 days here in Chicago.  :clap

I had the same problem and no amount of cleaning/lubing could fix it. I ordered a replacement head from a low cost internet marine supplier. The replacement was much more substantial than my 2002 era head. Has now worked very well for two years. (Now spins fast and moves at slightest breeze) My opinion, the 2000 era Raymarine head was not durable.

My boat was launched this week and the refrigeration is not working. It seems that the fan runs continuously but not the compressor. It has worked flawlessly for 10 years so am uncertain why it would fail now. Any thoughts or experience on this? I could use the advice/help.
Thanks,
Dave

Main Message Board / Re: 135 v. 150

My last boat C-30 FK, TR came with a hi-tech 150. We did poorly in the Weds Beer Can races; 150 was too heavy for light air and too big for really heavy air.
I had UK make a new dacron 135 and in the 1st year of use won the YC Beer Can series jib & main. My 34 has a heavy Catalina 150 that exhibits the same as above. When I buy a new headsail it will be a 135.
