The Xantrex instructions, referenced above via the web, essentially show what I call a negative distribution post (NDP).  They show it in their installation picture(s) as going to a kind of strip.  The negative wires from all of our batteries on Aquavite are connected to a Power Post Plus and then a separate ground wire runs back to the engine as a ground.  Our inverter/charger negative is also tacked onto that Power Post.  Just think of it as a negative distribution point (or strip).  As long as the ground wire from that NDP is large enough going back to the engine, the post or strip is essentially the same negative, whether the charger's negative is physically connected at the post or strip near the batteries, or if your run it all the way back separately to the engine.  Our post is under the galley sink by the HW heater on our Mark I.  I have the Power Post Plus because I use the smaller connections on its base for the bilge pump and stereo negatives.

Good luck with the batteries.  Calder's has something about trying to bring dead batteries back to life - give him a try.  I might have mentioned that in my reply to your earlier post on your situation.

We can't wait for the pictures.  Any chance you got ANY pictures of your earlier projects/  If not, now that you have a new digital camera (I know the drill, I put mine off for years and now wonder how I got along without it) please post some "after" flix.  Thanks and glad it's working.

And you had ANY batteries left after 12 years with that fat old piece of metal that you lugged around all this time?

You'll be amazed with your new charger.

PS  Mike, thanks so much for all your work and helping new owners find the links to subjects on the website.

Main Message Board / Shower Drain

Have you checked the check valve operation?  Many times the check valve gets clogged up with debris (i.e., hair, etc.) from the shower.  The check valve is located in the line from the shower sump underneath the head sink.  It's usually a black piece of plastic.  Harder to repair than to replace.  Ron hill suggested that we all place some screening over the shower drain with silicone sealant to keep larger pieces from going down the drain and clogging up the check valve.  The silicone allows you to remove the screen when it's worn and replace with a new piece.

A search on this board for shower drain found this:

Main Message Board / Oven Doesn't Work

Our stove is CNG but probably operates the same way as the LPG units.  Since we use our oven rarely, and the burners regularly, I generally forget how to light the oven.  There are, ahem, however, instructions right on the inside of the door, so that helps me "remember."  And who says guys don't ask for directions :!:

That's great and I'm glad it worked, but it seems like needing to bring a separate box with a battery to start your car.  You have a multipurpose piece of equipment that has to be moved from place to place, as compared to one IN PLACE that works.  If it works for you, it's a great alternative, but I sure like having that start battery right there. Period.  I don't have to remember to bring anything with me.  Just a thought.

Also, I published a Top Ten List in the February 2005 Mainsheet, that started with:  "#1) Do an Energy Budget so you’ll know what to expect from your electrical system."

So what did you do to deplete your house bank?

I continued with "3)#increase the house bank capacity to at least four times daily energy budget use (i.e., 100 AH per day = 400 AH
house bank) also, unless you’re always plugged in at night."

Glad everything else works for you and you enjoy your boat and contribute here.  Keep up the good participation.  Thanks,   :thumb:

Main Message Board / replacing fixed ports

I also tried another search on purchase fixed ports.  Larry Calfee and Tom Glennon showed up again.

There wasn't one specific answer to your question.  I do, however, remember some discussion about using TAP Plastics, a plastics company here in California, don't know if they're back your way.  There is, of course, the handy dandy method of calling Catalina Yachts and asking them.  Sometimes the most obvious escapes me.

Go to SEARCH at the top of this page.  Type in weblog in the search engine and hit the search button.

There will be about 12 or more hits.  Scroll down to the bottom, you'll see Steve Lyle's My First year WEBlog, and just above that another thread on fixed ports repair by tom glennon.

Take a look at a West Marine or 2004 BoatUS catalog (near the last few pages) or go to www.edsonmarine.com and check out their online catalog.  You can also order the Edson catalog for free.  It's full of technical detailed information.  The whole wheel brake assembly is pictured.  You should be able to order and install a replacement wheel brake pad, just like on your car brakes. Will require removing the compass, not a big deal.

"The good thing is that all the local vendors are running boat show sales on the refrigeration units right now! "

Then use their expertise and ask them how to best vent their units.  For instance, Alder Barbour has a special ducting kit for their units.  Other vendors may have similar packages and certainly should have the experience to help you out.  Good luck, and happy buying spree   :thumb:

Main Message Board / Weatherstripping
February 16, 2005, 06:10:52 PM
Mark I boats had the same leaky issues at the port locker and lazarette.  The main website had an FAQ on this hundreds of years ago:  use weatherstripping.  You could use 3/8 inch foam from a hardware store, or go to an automotive store and get really good rubber stripping.

It's worked for us and may work for you, but I am not that familiar with the details of the rims of the lockers on your Mark II.
