One of our own is racing again this year. Kyle Ewing on Donnybrook.
I was on the starting line and took these photos of Kyle and his crew.
He is racing in Cruising Division 2.
Chicago had torrential rains last night causing many crew transportation problems due to flooded streets.

QuoteSevere weather causes racers to change plans
In the 102nd Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Veuve Clicquot

July 24, 2010 (CHICAGO) – The 102nd Running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, presented by Veuve Clicquot, kicked off today despite the torrential rain that plagued the Chicagoland area for the last 12 hours.

"The Mac will sail on rain or shine," explained race spokesperson Christie Denson. "Crews prepare for these conditions by having proper foul weather gear, layers made of synthetic performance fabrics made to dry fast, as well and proper footwear and a change of socks."

Despite having the right gear, sailors still scrambled to make their boat calls amidst flooded streets.  Many boats had to register last minute crew changes with race officials, as sailors were trapped due to the havoc of the weather.

"Several boats had crew due to arrive from Michigan via train this morning. Due to flooding on the tracks, trains were shut down and they were unable to make the race," explained Chicago Yacht Club's Race Coordinator Amanda Matta.

This means many boats will be sailing lighter than anticipated, which can make for an added challenge to the 333 mile adventure up Lake Michigan.

353 boats made the starting line, and we will continue to monitor how weather impacts their race over the next several days. To track the boats, go to www.cycracetomackinac.com.

Main Message Board / Offshore Wind Farms
April 12, 2010, 08:20:09 PM
Evanston, IL, One of the cities just 15 miles north of Chicago has announced that it intends to study the feasibility of an offshore wind farm that would be located 6 - 9 miles from shore in Lake Michigan. The project would take up about 1 square mile and consist of approx. 10 wind turbines.

Does anyone have any experiences navigating or sailing around these areas?
These projects seem to be gaining momentum here in the states.

QuoteThe US offshore wind market is finally ramping up: Though no projects have been completed yet, Oregon, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Delaware  all have offshore wind farms in various stages of development. Meanwhile in Europe, offshore development continues strongly.

If you came through the Home Page on your way to the forum, (sounds like an old Bob Hope movie)
you may have noticed that for the last few months, the photo has been changing every 2 weeks.

The photos are from the C34 Flicker account, so if you have a photo(s) of interest, upload a few today!

Don't worry about the size, just upload it via the directions posted at:

I'm sure I speak for the entire fleet when I voice a concern for the hearty sailors around the Chesapeake this weekend. More snow than you've seen in how many years?

I heard our local weatherman say tonight that in the last three years combined Washington, D.C. has gotten only 22 inches of snow. The storm starting tonight has the potential of 24 - 30 inches of snow before it lets up.

Hope the galley is well stocked...

If you plan on attending Strictly Sail Chicago, make a point to stop by the Catalina Display and meet the Commodore! I will be working the Catalina Association booth Friday evening from 5 p.m. 'till closing time.

[attachimg=#]

After the show closes on Saturday, head over to the Hampton Inn at 33 W. Illinois, and rub elbows with Frank Butler and Sharon Day. Festivities begin at 8:00 p.m. in the large hospitality suite on the second floor. Soft drinks, pizza and salad will be served. The cost is $10.00 per person and will be collected at the door.

The Navy Pier Shuttle stops at the corner of State and Illinois, and runs every 30 minutes. Or, it's a pleasant 20 minute walk weather permitting.

Main Message Board / The Perfect Storm
November 13, 2009, 02:20:28 PM
Weathermen here in the Midwest are calling the current storm on the East Coast, "The Perfect Storm."
The remnants of tropical storm Ida and a Canadian high pressure have created quite a combination it seems, and has claimed at least two commercial fishermen so far.

Hope all our members out east are faring well.

September 25, 2009, 07:19:29 AM

Is the top of the oil dipstick tube removable?

It appears there is an o-ring seal inside the seam at the top, and the two collars gives you the impression that it  can be removed.

August 03, 2009, 07:16:42 AM

Had what I thought was indigestion last Tuesday.
By Wednesday it had become more uncomfortable.
The wife was out of town so I started making plans.

Thursday morning I had a friend walk the dog and then drive me to the Emergency Room.
After x-rays and a ct scan it turned out to be a burst appendix, and went right to surgery.

A 3 day stint in the hospital on antibiotics and back home on Saturday afternoon.

I asked the Doctor what causes it, and apparently it happens for no reason.
Go figure.

Main Message Board / Commodore's Message
July 08, 2009, 09:47:49 AM
Hello all,

It was an honor to be asked to be the Commodore of C34IA, and one of my goals is to give back as much as I have taken away from this site over the years.

Under Dave Sanner's guidance and encouragement, I have been working at fixing broken or conflicting links on the site, and updating pages for a more consistent look and feel. Stu and I have been steadily updating the content of the Tech Notes with the latest material. And as he mentioned in his sticky note, a new feature will be access to the original articles in .doc format with full size color pictures where available. These articles will be available to our members either to view on-line, or to download to your computer for viewing or printing.

If you have submitted an article and still have the original text and photos, please send them to Stu, and we can get them updated to the site. I learn a lot from pictures, so if you have them, send them. Even if you don't have text to go along with it. They're worth a thousand words sometimes.

One of the great features of this organization is the wealth of technical knowledge and content that is published here. When I was in the market for a larger boat, this site convinced me that a C34 was the only way to go. One of the drawbacks of buying a used boat, or new for that matter, is the availability of support after the purchase. This site, with all its tips, projects and FAQs made my decision one that I have never regretted. Thank you to all who have contributed over the years. Decades in some cases.

In an effort to expand this knowledge base and make searching for answers easier, I have begun a project to turn Jon Schneider's Excel Index file (which is now up to date through 2009) into an easy search menu. Here is a preview of what the format will look like. It will link to the current .PDF Tech Notes, the New Format .Doc files, Project Files, and also FAQ files.

A Larger View http://www.c34.org/tech-notes-index/images/TN_Menu.jpg

I look forward to working with everyone, especially the new members who have yet to join. We want to make the decision to sign up a no-brainer. The new format Tech Articles and the developing menu for the Tech Notes will be an investment well made.

Fair winds,
Bob Kuba

Main Message Board / Posting Pictures
January 15, 2008, 09:01:46 PM
If you're like me, I love pictures.
I love to see pictures posted of projects, repairs, and upgrades.
But sometimes the size of our pictures are just too big to deal with on this site. (SEE UPDATE BELOW)
I found a great FREE solution to resizing pictures.

If you're a Windows XP user, I found a free "PowerToy" written by Microsoft that resizes pictures with no effort at all.

There's no documentation with it, but it's so easy to use it doesn't need any.

You simply
1) Go to the Microsoft website here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

2) Click on ImageResizer.exe and it will download to your computer.
(Just remember where you saved it)

3) Find the file with Explorer and double click on it to install the program.
(Your computer will whir away for a few seconds, and won't give you any more clues that it was installed.)

4) Try it out.

Go find any picture on your computer and Right click on it.
Then in the text box that pops up, select Resize Pictures.

This menu will appear and you just select the size you want.
It doesn't affect the original picture, unless you tell it to.

It just makes a smaller copy of the original.

UPDATE
IMAGE UPLOADING

The max file size for images is currently set for 250kb. (250,000 bytes)
The photo will automatically be physically re-sized to 640 x 480 dimensions.
The max number of photos allowed per post is 5, with a 500kb limit per post.

For example, You could attach:
5 photos to a post if they were 100kb or less.
2 photos if they were 250kb each.
1 photo at 500kb.

If your photo is 800 x 600 and 325kb, it will be accepted to the forum without you having to worry about re-sizing it.
If the File Size is too large you will get the Error message as seen below.

TO UPLOAD
Just "Click" on the Additional Options... to expose the uploading menu which is below the message posting area.
When "Previewing" your post, the image WILL NOT display in the preview.
If you upload the wrong image by accident, just "modify" your post to delete it.
