Main Message Board / cracks in the keel
June 20, 2021, 07:06:38 AM
Hi all, finally got the bottom blasted and it revealed a number of cracks in the keel and one crack in the hull above prop. As a newbie to sailboats I need some advice as to what to do. Is it reparable? Can the whole thing be replaced? 1988 C34 wing keel. Photos are here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/ztwfap48tNRYNu5t9

Medved,
Not sure where you are located, but I bought my Flexofold a number of years ago from their Marblehead Ma dealer. That is their US base, or was. Not sure if it is still active. Look up "Flexofold Marblehead" for contact info.
Regards,
Ed

Found a contact on cruiser forum Hensen Marine. Placed an order today, should get it after Memorial Day.

I have a Flexofold as pictured. Jim has Max Prop.

Sorry, mixed them up. Noah, any advice on where to buy flexofold these days? I did some googling and did not see much.

QuoteCurious what the group is using for both fixed and folding as far as brand, size, pitch, size of the blade

I have a 3 blade Maxiprop.  Never had a problem with blades engaging or feathering, it's been trouble free 15 seasons.  Motors at near hull speed.  I think of it as the best sail change I've made.  Disadvantage $$
Jim

Is this the one you have? I am assuming 15 diameter and 10 pitch? https://flexofold.com/folding-propellers/5-shaft-propellers/17-3-blade-shaft-folding-propeller/

April 2015  Haulout 6 (I'm up to 8 now).

What brand of prop is it? Again, newbie here :)

Looking to replace original 2 blade prop on the new to me 1988 C34 M25X diesel. So far the reading I have done here points to 15 - 10 prop. I am leaning towards a fixed blade prop as I heard/read issues with folding props not engaging when put in reverse. Curious what the group is using for both fixed and folding as far as brand, size, pitch, size of the blade (sailor thinner or regular larger blade).

Main Message Board / winch on the mast
April 01, 2021, 06:46:07 AM
Another newbie question. I am working with a local rigger to change my setup for a short handed sailing. He recommended to move both spinnaker and headsail halyards to the boom to free up port side for other needs, such as vang, reefing, etc. I was thinking if it could make sense to move my non self-tailing winch to the mast and install a self-tailer to port. Has anyone done this? Good idea? Bad idea?

Thank you WTunnessen for the tips. I sent you a PM not sure if you got it.

Thank you Stu and all. I will keep researching and talking to riggers. Will share what I am thinking of doing here to get specific feedback.

As a newby to both sailing and specifically C34s I am looking for the wisdom of the community. I have purchased a 1988 C34 tall rig with the wing keel, and while the boat is an overall good condition it needs new standing and running rigging, as well as, new sails. If you had the opportunity to refit your boat, what would be the "ultimate" setup? One of the biggest problems I am trying to figure out is ability to reef from the cockpit. I am planning to single hand this boat primarily on the Chesapeake, but also want to set it up so I can take it coastal cruising. Looking through technical notes and reading posts here I am getting a bit overwhelmed. I am about to make a significant investment and planning to keep this boat for 5-8 years, so would like to get it "right" without having the practical knowledge. My experience with sailing is ASA 101-104, sailing on a sail only 24 foot boat with hank on sails, Bene 41 with everything furling and autopilot, and Seawind 1190 catamaran for a week last May.

Mid & Glenn : Both of you guys need to think about joining Fleet12 Chesapeake Bay.  Contact Dave Schreder @ 703-431-2162 or schr.712@verizon.net

I use a 150 genoa and a cruising spinnaker.  No whisker pole!

A few thoughts

Hi Ron, I have a 140 genoa but no light wind sail. I was thinking about a cruising spinnaker but they aren't cheap and wondered how much I'd use it... Do you use it a fair amount?

Thank you Ron. Do you find it difficult to see to leeward with the genoa fully out?

I am sorry, Tall Rig/ Wing Keel. Does your boat have a blue hull? Please set up your profile as it helps the members answer your questions IE name , year of boat, engine type, TR/WK.....

Thank you for the clarification. Once I finish all the paperwork I will do so. For now seller accepted my offer and broker is pulling together the paperwork.

What is TR/WK? Still learning sailing terms :) as far as the boat name I am not sure. I did not look.

Just purchased 1988 Catalina C34 Tall Rig with Wing keel. Looking for advice for light wind sails and setup for the Chesapeake. Should I invest in a bow sprit, mast modification to run furling Code 0 for example or just get 135-140% Genoa?
