Thanks Jim, this board is excellent, and so is the Catalina 34!

Thanks KWKloeber,
I will do a little more investigation next time I am at the boat. Regarding the driver sailing w/ the alarm on, no one else has been on board at the time so we're all trying to figure that one out

Thanks Ken, I will try your suggestion and see if the meter runs.

Thanks KWKloeber, original engine and engine alarm sounds w/o engine running, either on shut down or cold engine start.

My mechanic says its a M35BC, how do I determine if it uses (C) Catalina wiring standard?

Also, what is the "Alternator field excite circuit"?

Thanks ewengstrom!

I never leave the key on when the engine isn't running but the boat is part of a small club and I've discovered that one of our new members does :cry4` so I am trying to determine what else is running with the key on, lift pump is bad enough!

Hi all, new to this board and sailing a new to me 2000 mkII w/ M35BC.

I've searched the board on this topic but have not found exact answer so decided to post, pic of pedestal engine control panel attached for reference.

Two questions:
Regarding the ignition switch positions and what is energized at which position, can someone verify this:
--off (everything off)
--on (electrical on including electric lift pump)
--momentary on (glow plugs).

Regarding engine hours meter, is it energized when engine is running (ie, from alternator or other source?) or when key is in "on" position?

Thanks in advance!

Main Message Board / Re: New Standing Rigging

I replaced the standing rigging on a Catalina 320 a couple years ago. It was 20 years old and although there was no obvious sign of problems, decided it was time.

Some Catalinas also suffer problems with stem fittings, so replacing that might make sense at the same time. We also took the opportunity to replace steaming/deck light and check the rest of the electrical with the mast on the hard.

I had the same problem on a Catalina 320, even sheared off the screw as you did. The shifter was getting hard to shift and that was probably the reason it sheared off.

Debated replacing cables myself, but after a very experienced and usually happy mechanic took 3-4 hours to do it along with many choice four letter words, I was happy I didn't attempt it.

Really made all the difference and the shift is very smooth now. Mechanic said previous installation had some too sharp bends in it and it was the original (20yrs old).

joining this thread very late, but FWIW, had similar problem on Catalina 320 with Perkins that drove us crazy. After much troubleshooting, mechanic found impeller remnants upstream (not downstream). The raw water inlet to the pump is below the pump and apparently pieces of the impeller(s) dropped down and lodged themselves in the inlet hose. Cleaned out the inlet hose and problem solved.
