I inherited a nice winter cover from the PO for when the boat is on the hard (see pic).

Planning to keep the boat in the slip this winter. I've got ablative paint and would like to try and get another year out of it and I think the constant rubbing of the lines around the hull would probably wear it off.

Anyone with similar cover found a good way to secure it without the lines around the hull? I've of course seen all kinds of weights but have always wondered how well they work in a good wind.

The cover can be secured at the bow and stern without looping around the hull and I count seven grommets on each side that I could hang a gallon milk jug full of water. So 7 pounds each for a total of 49 pounds on each side. Doesn't seem like much weight.

Thoughts?

(My next post will be about de-icers :D)

Time to replace my Lifeline AGM batteries,  2 GPL-4dl house and a GPL1400t engine start.

Deka and US Battery have been recommended as less expensive but solid alternatives.

Any experiences with these batteries or other options to consider?

Main Message Board / M35BC Engine Vibration
April 16, 2021, 06:21:59 AM
Was out for a shake down sail this week. Forecast was for 5mph but we got a nice 15-20kts instead and had a chance to knock the rust off boat and crew and try out all the new running rigging. First "fun" sail in about a year.

Motoring back in the marina channel at 3 kts, we were surprised by a brief (2-3 sec) but loud vibration from the M35BC or propulsion system and throttled back immediately.

It appeared to be momentary, there was a longish puff of white smoke or steam, and then engine ran normally back to the slip.

I'm not going to over-react to a burp, but on the other hand I'm always listening for potential issues.

Leading theories:
1. The prop picked up something but quickly freed itself
2. An air bubble or other temporary contamination in the fuel system. Boat recently splashed after a winter on the hard and we did bounce around a bit that day.
3. Something related to work over the winter including PSS dripless shaft seal maintenance and damper plate replacement (3 hours of motoring before this, so less likely)
4. Someone suggested cavitation caused by following seas (way down on the list)

Main Message Board / snap ring on Oberdorfer
April 04, 2021, 02:42:00 PM
I did a search, but didn't find anything specifically on this.

When I exchanged the impeller on the Oberdorfer, it was missing the snap ring under the brass washer (it was also missing one of the washers).

To get the snap ring on, it appears that you have to pull the main impeller shaft 1/8 inch or so out from the engine to expose the channel on the shaft that the snap ring fits into. Is that the correct assembly?

If the shaft is pushed in all the way, the channel is buried in the impeller.

Main Message Board / small ding on prop blade
March 12, 2021, 04:23:09 AM
Discovered a ding towards the end of the prop blade. Looks like maybe the PO had smoothed it out.

Do I need to take any additional action, ie, will it affect the balance?

Main Message Board / on-the-hard to do list
February 22, 2021, 09:20:47 AM
The recent post about checking the torque on the keel bolts made me wonder what else I should be thinking about with the boat on the hard until this spring. Once splashed, except for short hauls, she'll probably be in the water for two years. A search didn't really come up with any check lists.

I'm checking items off the typical out-of-the-water winter work list: minor hull repair/painting, cleaning topsides, replacing zincs, lubing sea cocks, servicing knot meter, etc., and a couple non-standard items: inspected steering, serviced the dripless and replaced a noisy damper plate at the same time. (I'm also doing a bunch of things, replacing running rigging, etc, that can be done anytime.)

What else should I be thinking about that can only be done while the boat is out of the water?

Main Message Board / Source for aft compartment rug?
December 07, 2020, 04:10:32 AM
With all the thorny projects I'm working on, would be nice to find an exact-fit replacement for the little rug with snaps in the aft compartment! Am I dreaming?  :santa

Main Message Board / Soda blasting and barrier paint
December 07, 2020, 03:12:39 AM
We're considering soda blasting while on the hard this winter to remove 20 years of paint that is flaking and peeling to get down to gelcoat, and then painting with barrier coat and bottom paint next spring.

I'ver researched the board and would like any other experiences/opinions with soda blasting and barrier paint on Catalinas.

Any lessons learned?

I'm replacing original equipment mainsheet blocks this winter and Garhauer offers polished stainless steel or unibody anodized aluminum replacement blocks for about the same price. I'll admit I like the look of the anodized aluminum but if I go that route am I giving up any strength and longevity?

They are both rated at 3000lbs swl and I don't think weight is really a consideration. I notice the equivalent Harken aluminum block is about 60% the weight of the Garhauer aluminum and twice the price.

Main Message Board / traveller control lines replacement
November 11, 2020, 07:53:27 AM
I've got to replace traveller control lines and am obsessing over diameter, so I figure this is the right place to discuss!

Looks like what is coming out is 7/16 but Catalina specs say 5/16 for Garhauer traveller.

I know the smaller line is a little less easy to handle but we have problems once in a while with existing control line jumping the blocks or otherwise getting fouled, maybe because the line is too big?

Would appreciate opinions and experience regarding this 2/16 difference, thanks.

Hi all, new to this board and sailing a new to me 2000 mkII w/ M35BC.

I've searched the board on this topic but have not found exact answer so decided to post, pic of pedestal engine control panel attached for reference.

Two questions:
Regarding the ignition switch positions and what is energized at which position, can someone verify this:
--off (everything off)
--on (electrical on including electric lift pump)
--momentary on (glow plugs).

Regarding engine hours meter, is it energized when engine is running (ie, from alternator or other source?) or when key is in "on" position?

Thanks in advance!
