Main Message Board / Re: Loose spreader
December 27, 2018, 11:02:10 AM

I had cracked base which, along with decades of wear, the two holes on one side had widened.  The fix was a set of new bases and drilling a larger hole through the spreaders and spreader bars and installing oversized pins.  It was an easy job w/ the mast on the dock... probably doable without pulling the mast but if unsure check with a rigger.

As far as safe to sail... it's hard to say ... all depends on how loose and sea/wind conditions (always expect the worst).

My repair stiffened things up considerably, a good feeling, especially pushing through steep waves.  I'd recommend doing the repair sooner than later.

Main Message Board / Re: Stemhead Fitting Repair
December 24, 2018, 08:32:12 PM

My stem fitting needs to come off as it has straightened as it "cut the corner" / flattened out a bit between where it leaves the hull and where it goes around the deck.

This 'corner cutting' has lifted the stem about 3/16 off the deck ... over the years.  Apparently there wasn't enough/any solid backing material behind the gap in the transition from the hull to the deck.

My plan is pull off the stem, rework the angles of the strap/stem and fill the gap behind the strap with some sort of non-compressible fiber board and epoxy.
(I may call Garhauer before then to check their pricing for a new stem - and getting the 5 holes lined up presents a bit more work/planning)

I have the 1/4 inch aluminum backing plate on 4 of my 5 bolts (which has been more than adequate) ... assume the top one is screw from the outside. (see attached)

The 2nd attached image shows the backing plate and skewed angle of the stem strap that has cut the corner.

A review up and down my dock reveals some lifting on the stem fitting is more often found than not... regardless of manufacturer, even on boats less than 1/2 the age of my 1988 c34.

Main Message Board / Re: Flexible coupling
September 24, 2018, 09:53:56 PM

I added one of these http://www.pyiinc.com/flexible-shaft-couplings.html  which was pretty easy to install (I had to cut the shaft down but had enough key left to use original shaft setup) and wasn't that expensive.   It also provides some shock load reduction and electrical isolation.

It helped a little bit with vibration (not as much as installing soft engine mounts).

I think it might also reduce the stress on the cutless & dripless elements when using softer engine mounts.
Finally supposedly helps a little bit with mis-alignment ... but engine should be reasonably aligned.

If you don't have any engine issues then it sure does sound like you're over propped.  Ron makes a good point about your prop may not be a sailor prop... and checking his article.  Good luck.   Sailboats like folding props ;)

I'd be careful in going over 15" in diameter as you could get buffeting on the hull.

If you're over propped @ 15x10 ... 16x13 will surely be too much.

Finally, what's your max RPM at WOT in neutral?
It should be close to your max RPM motoring on a calm day in flat water (and without black smoke).  If it's not then you are likely over propped.

How do you get ahold of that guy?!!   ;)

Hey Jon, sorry for the delay, give it a try now I just updated the config file which hopefully will do the trick.

Ken, by clean up the orphaned pages I assume you mean add their links to relevant (higher level) pages?  Sorry, I don't think I got your email.

Looks like there are 43 orphaned pages:  http://c34.org/wiki/index.php?title=Special:LonelyPages
No big deal ... orphaned just means no other pages in the wiki link to it ...

For example there was a page titled "Muffler" ... I went to add that to the engine index page and found a page on the exhaust system
which already had the links on the Muffler page and more...  so need need for the Muffler page.  42 orphaned pages.

Couple other updates:

- Passwords on technotes have been fixed (hidden .htaccess -> htpass fully qualified paths)

- Looks like all the wiki based project pages have the links  from the original projects page (Missing Jon Schneider who I believe did a lot of that work - he was a great supporter in getting the wiki up and going!)  Thanks to everyone else who has contributed to it as well over the years.

Finally an update from cutting over to new web hosting service.  Besides a few normal bumps everything went smoothly except the BBS was throwing errors that it couldn't connect to the database from time to time (like several times/hour and kept emailing me).  After server support chat sessions and a few emails I finally spoke with someone on the phone who also couldn't identify the reason but turned on db logging for me to help.  They must have seen/done something else as the issue promptly went away.    So we're good to go!

Ken I updated the home page linking to the boat/project page on the day you posted about it (Sunday?)

I just updated the 2nd link on the home page to the new Projects page (It had been pointing to the archived/static version from old site)
Here's the old link:  http://www.c34.org/projects/projects.html   Are all of these old links in the wiki now and referenced?  If not we should add them to the Projects page

Speaking of archived pages, the Wiki could really use a FAQ page instead of relying on the old (old site/static) FAQ page here: http://www.c34.org/faq-pages/faq.html     One of these days:  (just  a thought)

Whiskymac, thanks for pointing out missing old tech notes... moved back into place, working on a password issue with them now.

Ken,

Email... who knew?   Where do you have email notifications?

I just tested signing up for a new account and email did go out.

Can you please sub/unsub your notifications to see if that help ... test again if there's a way, etc.

thx

Paul, do you know the size of you image?  You may have bumpd up against the max upload size on the server ... if so I'll need to / hopefully can override.

The resizer plugin is active on this site but it may have it's own issues.   A good test would be a small file size with dimensions that need to be resized for the page.

I'll put it on my list.  Thx

You guys are tough with the details!  ;)

Found the bug (I had to hack the PHP code to get the C34 Home C34 Tech Notes ... links that the top of all the pages) and fix was simple once I found it...

Just added:  </div> above my original mods/hack.

Thanks for pointing that out!

btw, Also upgraded to latest version of SMF last night.

Thanks for the feedback Dave.

I'm looking into a work around / fix ... I've hacked a section of the BBS code which caused by a bug I introduced when I switched to non-persistent db connections.

I fixed that bug so we hopefully won't see these pages on the front end... but I'm still getting connection issues on the back end.

You're welcome.

If anyone sees any failed page loads please let me know as I'm having some issues with the database backed but I haven't seen any issues first hand / on the front end here.

I have a ticket open with the hosting site ... we'll see what they say.  So far things seem a bit snappier to me.

Thanks.

Main Message Board / Re: File size too large
April 05, 2017, 09:41:23 PM

I just installed the add-on on to the bbs.  Images over 1024 in any dimension will be resized down to that.
Jpeg's will also be recompressed at 75% image quality.

I Attached and uploaded an image (above) and you can see the results (click on the image to see full resized image)

The original was a 1.6 MB image size 3000 × 2835 pixels which was automatically convert to 118.65 kB, 1024x967.

Seems to work pretty well.
