Main Message Board / Alternator Upgrade for M35AC
April 04, 2017, 11:22:51 AM
Guys, I'm sure that this is already discussed on here but darn if I can find it.

I'm in the process of upgrading my electrical system.  I don't plan to upgrade the alternator this year but I would like to know what I might replace it with so that I can better plan this year's upgrades and not have to redo something in the future.

What's everyone's favorite high output alternator these days?

I think it's an NPS vs BSP issue.  Different number of threads per inch, for many diameters, and a different shaped thread... One rounded, one flat.  All that said, it would probable work mechanically, just may be hard to seal.

What's the size limit?  I may be able to shrink it.

the diameters of the flush "plug" portion are significantly larger on the old ones than the new ones.  Of course, I can fill and redrill, but I'd prefer not to if I convince myself that it's a safe option.

My understanding is that they can make their valves with a lower portion to match the old thru hulls or the new ones, by putting an "N" at the end of the part number, but I'm not 100% yet.

What I got from my contact there is that if I send him the dimensions of my thru hulls and the dimensions of my existing hose barbs, he can sell me a valve that will use my old thru hull and end in the same size barb, pointed accordingly.  That way, I avoid having to fill and redrill for the thru-hulls.  Not 100% committed but that's where I'm headed today.

Got it... http://c34.org/bbs/index.php/topic,4949.msg30101.html#msg30101

For some reason, the "OEM 1-2-B Switch Wiring History " is part of the link.

Here's what I have now...  I intended to replace my thru hull along with the valve but the shape and size of the flush "mushroom" isn't the same.  Forespar tells me that they can make the valves with a thread on the bottom to match the old thru hulls.  They aren't flanged in the traditional sense... no thru bolts... but they have a wide base to support them from failing due to rocking to one side and, according to Maine Sail's video test, they are plenty strong in shear.

I didn't take any yesterday... it looked good to me, with some runs and thick spots up top (START AT THE TOP!) before I improved my skill set.... but I'll be back next week for the final coat and I'll take some then.  I put the zinc chromate on the bare spots first.  The two coats of pre-kote didn't cover them so I was nervous about the paint but the brightside itself definitely covered better and has a shiny finish.  Give me a week and I'll bore the crowd with a picture.

I'm replacing my thru hulls and valves with series 93 forespar parts.  They are being great to work with and are helping me put together what I need from thru-hull to hose barb.  That's pretty straight forward everywhere but on the cooling water intake where there is a strainer involved.

I'm considering replacing my cooling water strainer with forespar's while I'm in here but there's no flow rate marked on mine.  Theirs is 40 gpm and, give it's size, is, I'm guessing way more than mine.

Was their a standard one used in our setup?  All I have on mine for markings is that it's 1/2" NPT and not for use with alcohol.

Folks, I see lots of great info about how my boat should be wired but first, I want to understand how it IS wired! I have the schematic in my manual, but that doesn't show the charging circuits.

I have a battery switch on my panel where I have 4 heavy gauge red wires.  Post one and two go directly to my batteries.  The two on my common post I assume are my windlass and starter, the former because it runs to the switch before leaving and the latter based on the schematic.

In my battery box are two red leads for each bank.  One goes to switch.  Surely the other goes to the charger (two outputs)

So where the heck would the alternator have been wired in if my wiring is original?  Is there an isolator I haven't found?

Zinc chromate on bare spots, 2 coats of pre-kote, first coat of Brightside so far and pretty happy with the results.

I started with 3 inch roller and 1" foam brush.  I'd recommend a wide foam brush... 4" maybe?  Someone took pity on me and gave me two.  Made a world of difference.  I'll switch to a wider roller for the next coat.  I think I could do a good job of I had it to do again!

the OD of the outside flange is 2.3-2.4 inches... pictures of my thru hulls are here that show more dimensions if that's not what you were asking.

Well this isn't going as smoothly as I'd hoped... Surprise!

I have three 1/2 valves and three 3/4 inch valves.  Catalina no longer has or uses the 1/2 in valves, so I contacted Forespar.  I'm working with Randy there trying to identify what I need but the outer end of the 93 series thru-hulls doesn't have the same cross section as what came off the boat.  What came off the boat were all the same OD, independent of ID/thread size.  Other than filling in the flush countersinks and going to mushrooms or redrilling for new flush thru hulls, anyone got any ideas?
