Main Message Board / Masthead Wiring Stress Relief
April 16, 2017, 07:19:02 PM
I'm rewiring my mast this weekend... for the second or third time for but this time for real!

I can't find anything telling me how to relieve the stress on all that hanging wire.  Any recommendations of what I can do at the top so the electrical connections and mechanical fasteners at the mast head aren't taking the full load of all that hanging wire?

You guys are fantastic.  Thanks for the info.  I really appreciate the effort it takes!
#333
Thanks, Stu.  Some I'd read and remembered. Some I'd read and forgotten.  Some I hadn't seen yet.  In any case, the fog is clearing!

Jeremy, you mentioned having done insight into which ACR?  I see three from blue seas... The mini is only good to 65A.  Might work now but not after alternator upgrade.  The ML is much higher current rated than I think I'd ever see with a single alternator, even a high output.  That leaves new with the SI, good to 120A.  In the immortal words of Goldilocks... Just right.  That sound like a reasonable assessment or did I miss something?

I'd appreciate any and all additional info.  I was leaning towards the SI model ACR based on the price point and the fact it's the one Maine Sail sells, but if there's a reason to consider another one, or even an echo charger, today's the day to educate me as I expect to order tomorrow!

Hey, you guys will be glad to know that I searched again, found several articles on the proisocharge and how, while it works fine, it isn't worth the extra hundred bucks.

I'm in the process of comparing the blue seas ACR to the echo charger so I can understand the pros and cons.

I'm also reading through the wiring diagram changes so I can get things working right on my boat.  Don't waste time posting links... I got 'em. ;>)

All:

I appreciate all I've read on the subject, and I've read a lot, both here and on Maine Sail's page but I have a couple of questions.

I'm considering the GC12's rather than the 6 V golf cart batteries and I can find no mention of them here on the forum.  That makes me think I'm not searching properly since everything seems to be on here somewhere!  Maine Sail doesn't have an issue with them so I'm thinking that maybe they don't fit?

Also, I'm looking at the promariner proisocharge (http://www.promariner.com/en/products/proisocharge-series) rather than an ACR.  Pros?  Cons?

Lastly, I'll upgrade the alternator in the next year or so and my understanding is that I'll need an external voltage regulator to really take advantage of it.  Is there a single device, or recommended pair of devices, that will give me the desired voltage output from the new alternator, while still isolating the batteries and being relatively smart about directing the charging current?

I'm dumbfounded.  That's brilliant!

I finally got mine ordered today...  I decided to glass in and redrill and go with mushrooms rather than flush mounts since none fit the countersinks already in my boat.

I left my galley sink raw water in at 1/2.

I upsized my engine cooling water intake from 1/2 to 3/4.  (It steps down to a 5/8 hose anyway, but I'm replacing the strainer, mounting it off the valve, and running 3/4 from the valve to the strainer and strainer to engine before stepping down to 5/8.

I upsized my galley sink drain and macerator output to 1" to match the hose barbs.

I left my head inlet / shower outlet and head sink drain at 3/4.

I ordered them all from Forespar since I couldn't find the configurations I wanted of the OEM 93 Series used on the new boats anywhere else.

Re plug location, I have hull number 1251, a 93 model built in December of 92, and mine is in the cockpit, not in on the stern.  I see Dave's is a year later and on the transom.  Not sure if that helps bracket when they moved it, or proves that the location isn't consistent!

If only that was a simple question!

Macerator Outlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – 1.03"
Hose Barb OD – 1.08"
Hose Barb Configuration – 180
Thru Hull Configuration – flush

Head Sink Outlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – 1.02"
Hose Barb OD – 0.85"
Hose Barb Configuration – 180
Thru Hull Configuration – flush

Head Inlet / Shower Sump Outlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – 1.02"
Hose Barb OD – 0.84"
Hose Barb Configuration – double 90
Thru Hull Configuration – flush

Engine Raw Water Inlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – 0.81"
Hose Barb OD – 0.67"
Hose Barb Configuration – 180 female pipe
Thru Hull Configuration – flush

Galley Sink and Ice Box Outlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – .82"
Hose Barb OD – 1.09"
Hose Barb Configuration – single 180
Thru Hull Configuration – flush

Galley Raw Water Inlet
Thru Hull Thread OD – 0.82"
Hose Barb OD – 0.52"
Hose Barb Configuration – single 90
Thru Hull Configuration – mushroom

All that said, the two hose barbs that are 1" are on 3/4" valves and thru hulls and my engine raw water is 1/2" which seems way too small, so I think I'll glass over the holes and redrill for valves that match the hose.

Not quite dark enough to be chocolate syrup... more like hardened coffee... hmmm...

Definitely leaking out of the hatch hardware...  Any recourse other than to pull the hatch and see what I find?
#343
I went to the boat this weekend and noticed an odd stain on the floor.  It was immediately below one of the twist latches holding the screen to the hatch over the center of the boat, aft of the mast.  I could see the brown on that twist latch to match.  It looked like about a 1/2 teaspoon on the floor underneath (white fiberglass since the floorboards are up for refinishing).

It had dried in place and become quite hard... almost like dried varnish or glue (or old west system epoxy after the color changes).

I'm sure I can get it up, that's not the issue... but the root cause, and it's repair, are my bigger concern.  Anybody got anything?

FWIW, they did send the paperwork in.  The *real* USCG just verified that it was processed  and had been mailed back to them two days ago.  Once I get that in the mail, it will be good for 1 year.

Now all that's left is to talk to them about cancelling the "renewal" service that they sold me.  I went ahead and paid for 5 years and they apparently will do the paperwork for me, at quite a profit.

I hang my head in shame.  They got me.  I used their website to do my paperwork.  It was stupid expensive (I know now) but not having done it before, I didn't know any better.  I can't believe I didn't catch on but I didn't.

I'll call the credit card company and see if it's too late to reverse the charges and start over again with the real USCG.
