Main Message Board / Re: AC Install in Mk 1 C34

Minor Mod- I removed the glued in support beams, unnecessary and slightly too high if I want to put a bit of anti vibration mat beneath the AC Unit.

Glassed the shelf in place (just lower and slightly further aft)

Set AC unit on the shelf on 1/2" rubber mat just to get a feel for where the hoses & wires have to go.

Port side of AC unit on Shelf

Front view of AC unit on Shelf

Top view of ACT unit (note access to service ports)

Next step is to secure the unit's tray to the shelf & install the electrics.

Control panel is going to be mounted at the NAV station, out of sunlight, far enough away from the air outlets and close enough to be within 15' of the AC unit's electrical panel.

Main Message Board / AC Install in Mk 1 C34

Step 1 (after figuring everything out - at least I hope I have it figured out)
Install Shelf under V-Berth for the AC Unit.

Shelf location marked up and light sanding.

Plywood supports 5200'd in place (It's a glue!)

Made the Shelf templates from pieces of cardboard laid out on the supports, numbered and marked up.

Make shelf at home. (next)

We too are headed to the Bahamas Spring 2016. We looked at this unit (Desall Katadyn 40 E Water Maker) and decided the price was not worth it for our intended cruising plans.

The reviews we found were pretty good (plenty to see on Google) but the $4,000 was not in our budget.

We plan to fill tanks at Docks/Slips/Marinas every week which gives us 10 gallons a day or 5 gallons each per day.

So instead of a water maker (for now) we're installing a 3 phase water filter (includes UV treatment) for the water from the pump to the galley sink via a dedicated spigot and a pre fill water filter for use when filling the tanks in foreign ports.

I'll post an article about the install when complete (should be installed by end of November, right now I'm focused on the AC install)

was able to quickly clear the material by using my air horn.

Wonder what the fish life thought of that?!   :nail
FIRE IN THE HOLE!  :party

One fish looked at another and asked 'Did you do that!'

Thanks David, as the webmaster for the c25 assoc, I know that it's a lot of work. I'm glad you're doing it  :D

Thanks for the quick response Stu.

I like that idea (T above shut off valves)

Plan is to rework all of the plumbing, and I think I'll implement that idea.

After figuring out that the reason my engine temperature gauge reads low is because the engine is running cool due to an open thermostat, it was a surprise when the engine started to get hot during our shake down cruise.

Quick look over the side and no water pumping out! White smoke (steam) puffing out and disappearing quickly.

Shut off the engine.

Inspected the old raw water filter and it was pretty full of grass. Cleaned it out, ran the engine, no better.

Inspected the water pump impeller (recently replaced with the new water pump) - looked and felt fine.

Removed the hose off the raw water shut off valve, opened the valve, water barely trickled out. - Blocked through hull.

Confirmed problem by putting the raw water hose into a gallon jug of fresh water, ran the engine, it sucked it out in about a minute.

Poked a long plastic tie wrap down the open valve, but it would barely go down, and made no difference in the trickle.

Removed the hose from the shower sump shut off valve, opened the valve and water poured out - OK, got a source for the engine water.

10 mins work and had reworked the hose connections to move the engine hose to the shower sump shut off valve.

Ran the engine, pumping really well, temp stay normal (low) Life is good.

Later I reworked the shower sump hose to connect to the original engine raw water shut off valve and tested the shower sump pump, worked fine. I'll check the original raw water shut off valve and through hull at the next haul out, which will be sooner rather than later.

The Back story!
It's only because the great advice given on this forum and in the tech notes that I knew how to deal with this issue.

Kudos to all contributors.

Noah, probably the best option.

We can sleep 2 in V-berth, 2 in aft berth, 1 on port settee, 2 on stbd settee that's 7 in the cabin.

Add one for each cockpit bench and one at the helm (reading bedtime stories)

So 10 souls max.

Not sure if we would be carrying enough food for that crowd and we had better have plenty of bog roll and be outside the 3 mile limit too!

Just read the tech wiki about the circlip.

Got it!

(Dang, I just ordered the circlip tool from CD. last night. I'll call and cancel that one!)

Thanks again.

Thanks Ken,

Will do:

  • Check the impeller as it ran dry when I turned off the Raw water
  • Remove the pump and grind off enough to be able to put it on without having to remove the governor nuts
  • Check the thermostat (I assume that's inside the housing where the sensors are located?)

Paul.
