Main Message Board / Re: Wrench for raw water strainer

Try a strap wrench. Be careful loosening and tightening so you don't damage the thru hull/seacock.

I changed to a Vetus raw water strainer attached to the bulkhead to remove it from the seacock, give me better visibility inside the strainer basket, and to have straight through access to the outside if the thru hull/seacock were to get clogged.

Ed wrote "They replaced the cable, and smoothed out the run which they thought had some sharp turns". Before spending time, money, and using up your annual budget of "MF's and FU's" fighting stubborn fasteners in hard to reach places :D, check the cable run for sharp bends/tight turns. You might get lucky.

To disconnect the panels I installed a Cole Hersee 25a toggle switch and led (lit when panel is live) for each panel. The Victron Energy MPPT history tab has very helpful information as well.

Main Message Board / Re: Routing Cables in Cabin Roof
August 03, 2023, 06:04:25 PM
On the MK 1's most wiring is around the perimeter of the boat along the coach roof. Exceptions are the head outlet and light wiring comes in thru the port cockpit locker. Some wiring goes under the floor to the galley, engine, and head.

If the dodger 1" tube support attaches to the deck above the port cockpit locker could you feed the wire thru it into the port cockpit locker?

The actual cable may have a small radius bend in it along the path to the transmission. I had a similar problem with the engine shut down cable. Turned out as it passed the rudder tube it had a tight radius bend in it for no reason. Wouldn't shift the engine lever all the way even though the handle was all the way down in the cockpit. Couldn't start the diesel. Made a bigger bend and engine started. Sounds weird, but tight bends cause resistance. Worth following the cable path.

The CD unit is cheaper than Marine Outfitters as well. Is Ron saying your fuel sender doesn't mount on top of the tank?

Main Message Board / Prop Shaft Line Cutter

Anyone have a line cutter on their prop shaft? What brand and how did it work. Thanks.

Check the flange hole pattern on the tank as well.

I replaced mine with a reed switch type sending unit from Catalina Direct. PN Z3529.

I commented in reply 13 of the same thread pbyrne referenced above. I installed 2 Renogy flexible 175W panels on my bimini.

Happy to help. Good decision on purchasing the Balmar alternator and battery temperature sensors. They provide important info to the regulator to get the most out of your system safely.

FWIW - I have a Solar panel write up with photos, schematic, and parts list in the Tech WIKI. Look under Projects by Boat/Author, Della Jean to find it, and other improvements I wrote up for my 1987 MK1. Good luck.

Main Message Board / Re: Black soot and cleaning

Looks like the original Aqualift brand muffler was replaced with a Vetus Waterlock brand muffler. Vetus makes very good products so I'd consider that an upgrade.

For cleaning, at different times I've had success using Barkeepers Friend, Simple Green, TSP, FSR, and distilled white vinegar mixed with dish soap (1 teaspoon of white vinegar and 1 teaspoon dish soap per cup of water).

I went with 2 Renogy 175W flexible solar panels on the bimini attached hook and loop/lapel method. Each solar panel is controlled by it's own Victron Energy SmartSolar MPPT 75/15 charge controller. Also added a Victron Energy Smart Battery Sense Temp/Voltage Sensor for the charge controllers.

I came to the same conclusion pbyrne. Be reasonable with your power usage, and the fridge is the power hog. All but two of my light fixtures are LED. Anchor light, nav lights, spreader lights are also LED. Radar, chart plotter are low power.  I do not have an inverter. I've dropped anchor on a Tuesday morning, and picked up the anchor Friday morning and the batteries were 95-100% SOC. The solar panels did all of the charging.

A good charge controller will have settings for the charging sequence you asked about in your original post. I installed Victron Energy MPPT charge controller's with Bluetooth and a Smart Battery Sense. I'm very happy with them. Since installing the panels, I was surprised that even when skies are overcast my panels are pushing quite a few amps into the batteries.
