Main Message Board / Hard Transmission
May 12, 2020, 05:33:53 PM
What are some of the reasons my transmission would be very hard to shift Forward and Reverse?

Main Message Board / Mast unstepping - silly question
August 25, 2018, 04:44:30 PM
I have never removed a keel stepped mast, so,excuse my ignorance. After the mast is removed, how do you seal the deck hole? Need more than a tarp if the boat gets moved across the country.

Main Message Board / San Diego slips

Hello to all the San Diego members!  We are possibly relocating to San Diego and I would like to know what options are suggested to keep my boat.

Thanks,

Main Message Board / Anchor Light Replacement
April 24, 2018, 10:56:04 AM
I was up the mast trying to remove the original anchor light and it would not lift off. Has anyone done this job without removing the mast cap? Is the wire just that tight? I feel like I'm overlooking something. 3 screws. Loosen base. Lift up to disconnect wires.

I just completed the installation of a new Furler (Hood SeaFurl-5).  My Hood 915 continuous line furler was still in good condition. I upgraded along with the rest of the standing rigging. I'm willing to part with parts for the cost of shipping.

Main Message Board / Stainless or galvanized bolts
March 05, 2018, 10:35:35 AM
In removing my thermostat housing, as others have, I broke one of the bolts. I was wondering if this bolt should be replaced with stainless or some other material since it is attaching mild steel / iron engine parts.

Main Message Board / Standing Rigging lengths
March 05, 2018, 06:59:45 AM
Just a quick note to remind people that the specs are not always accurate.  I have a 1989 Tall Rig and the rigging is almost a foot longer for each section.  My actual numbers are below.  I will update with the forestay length soon.

Upper shrouds   45' 2-1/2"
Fwd lowers        24'
Aft lowers          24' 3"
Back stay           43' 11-1/2"
Bridle (split)       5' 9"
Forestay             47' 4.5"

Main Message Board / Luff length with furler upgrade
February 26, 2018, 05:45:10 PM
For you that upgraded from the Hood 915 to the SeaFurl-5 (325).  Did you need to modify your headsail to adjust for a change in hoist length?

Main Message Board / Thermostat source
February 21, 2018, 05:43:58 PM
Please help. I going crazy.  Every time I think I found a vendor/part number for a 160 F thermostat for my 25XP, it says its 180 or doesn't say.  I know it probably doesn't matter too much, but I sail in the warm waters of the Chesapeake, so I'd like to stay cooler. Anyone bought a thermostat lately? Would rather not pay $60 to Universal.  By the way, the reason I need a thermostat is because my boat did not have one.  Go figure.

Ok, I'm probably overlooking something stupid, but what is the method that you use to remove the old coolant from the engine - "On Purpose".  I have replaced coolant after it leaked out , but never when it was still in the engine.

TIA

Main Message Board / New Forestay - Old Furler?
January 26, 2018, 11:13:35 AM
Ok, I've read over and over about how people changed their forestay when they upgraded their furler.  What I have not heard is the guy that did not need a new furler, but his forestay is probably 30 years old.  I have the Hood continuous line furler (915?).  I have read that the stay does not slide out of the extrusion and that it must be disassembled. is this true?  How much of a PITA is it to put back together?

Main Message Board / stainless deck fill cover
April 24, 2017, 06:22:40 AM
Catalina Direct has custom made Stainless Steel caps that retro-fit our plastic (winch handle) tank covers.

http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/4150_752/deck-pipe-cap-diesel-stainless-steel.cfm

I ordered the Diesel tank cap with haste, as it seemed that it would protect from water.  I received the cap and took it to the boat to install.  Very nice quality cap, but oops... my boat was already upgraded to the "deck key" style fill.  I guess that's what I get for not using very much fuel.

Anyway, would anyone like to take this very nice stainless steel diesel tank fill cover off my hands?

$40 delivered.

Main Message Board / Outboard Rail Mount
February 11, 2017, 10:15:15 AM
I just bought a new outboard and need to find a mounting bracket for the rail.  I have a 1989 MKI and an 81 lb motor (9.9HP). I tried the plastic bracket (for 8HP) from WM and it didn't fit due to the "T rail" not being square. Do most people custom make their brackets? I refuse to pay Edson $300+.

Thanks

Main Message Board / K50 Mounts to K75 Mounts
August 29, 2016, 07:07:05 AM
I have read just about every engine mount thread I can find, but I have not found this answer.  If I need to switch the rear mounts to K75's (K50's all around now), do I need to loosen the front mounts to raise the rear of the engine?

Main Message Board / Mystery starter/alternator wire
August 26, 2016, 03:29:19 PM
Long story, short: wires were removed from the engine so it could be lifted. The red wire between the alternator and the starter had been removed a while back and the alternator was directly wired to the house battery. When the wires were reconnected, an orange wire was run between the alternator and the starter.  I think it is supposed to be on the starter, but does anyone know what it is supposed to connect to?

Main Message Board / repairing shaft log
August 17, 2016, 06:46:58 PM
Ok, so I had the boat yard help me get my engine raised and new mounts installed - just didn't want to do it myself Anyway, after removing the shaft seal, they found that the shaft had been riding so low in the tub that the bottom of the log had worn away and was cracked.  They are suggesting glassing around the outside to strengthen and hopefully still be able to fit the PSS shaft seal on after removing insert.  Anyone have a take on this theory?  Should I insist they try to glass inside?

Main Message Board / Another Starting Battery post
August 16, 2016, 10:20:39 AM
I'm sure this has been asked and discussed before, but my searches have come up empty.  If I have Four 6V batteries, do I have a need for a starting battery?  I just changed over from two group 31's and a starting battery.  The group 31's were so bad that I did have need for starting battery. I see so many posts about adding starting batteries to a 450 AH battery bank.  Why?

Main Message Board / Sink Drain Thru Hull
April 03, 2015, 09:55:13 AM
Ok, here's one for you guys.  Anyone ever come across this craziness?  First of all the sink drain was plumbed so that the 1 inch hose took a hairpin turn under the water pump platform to attach to a elbow fitting at the thru hull.  Could have easily gone straight down with it, so I attempted to remove the elbow.  Ha!  They installed a "wall" right next to it so it will not back off.  I will either have to remove EVERYTHING or cut the fitting.  hate to sacrifice a nice marlon elbow fitting... Gotta love these 30 minute jobs.

Main Message Board / Removing Shaft
October 13, 2014, 07:36:44 AM
I am planning to replace the cutless and shaft seal this winter. Has anyone been successful at removing the shaft without cutting it?  Or do I need to plan on replacing the shaft too.

Main Message Board / securing v berth filler
October 05, 2014, 12:18:37 PM
Has anyone done anything to keep the filler section of the v-berth from falling down? My kids like to climb up there so I keep the filler section on the lower level. It keeps falling off after the second kid (3yo twins) climb up. I'm afraid it may do the same in the upper level.
