Main Message Board / Re: Charging with Honda 1000
August 17, 2012, 04:22:36 PM
I used to use my eu2000 to charge on my last boat (stinkpot 3270) that had a newer 30amp 3/bank charger.  With batteries pulled down that charger used approx 700 watts or just about 6 amp.  I don't see why the 1000 wouldn't handle it fine expecially after 30 minutes or so of charging as the draw from the charger should gradually reduce.

I still have issues with the C34 wiring.  When I plug my inverter in, it goes into alarm mode with my main breaker and all breakers switched off!   Go figure?

Sounds like mine is the same configuration as yours.  Remember, I haven't lowered this sail yet as when I took delivery 6/1/12 the boat was rigged for the season.

My bigger question is this:

How common is this type of configuration.  I would guess that my uneven wrap is the result of some "not so perfect" condition, tension of the most recent hoist, swivels in need of lubrication or something.  All of my previous furling head sails had a luff tape sewn in with a luff cord to feed into the furling extrusion. (1976 Catalina 27 with Hood Line Drive and 1979 Allmand with ProFurl)  I guess I'm just more comfortable with that.

I'm not an electronics Guru but on my last sailboat 31' Allmand I replaced all coax with heavy coax much like the LMR400 with soldered PL259 connectors..  I believe I used a Celwave Antenna.  With a simple Standard Horizon VHF I outperformed most everyone else over the water, with the exception of the Coast Guard.

Main Message Board / Interesting Furling Genoa
August 15, 2012, 11:26:20 AM
This year I purchased hull 854.  She's fitted with North sails.  My genoa seems attached to the roller furling extrusion at the luff by zipping around it.  It doesn't appear to have a cord sewn in and slid inside the extrusion.  After bringing the boat back in 25G35-40Kt winds with plenty of reefing it appears to have more wraps at the head than at the foot.  When furled I have two wraps of furling around the sail on the furling extrusion only to have it fail to wrap the next time with the furling line hauled all the way in the cockpit.

I know that I've been living in the "dark side" the last 11 years with my 3270 MotorYacht but I've never seen a head sail constructed like this.  Just want to know if this is the norm now and will I appear crazy if I call a loft and ask them to sew a luff tape and cord into my sail.

Sincerely

Steve Witt

Main Message Board / Re: Hatch Wind Scoop Decision

I looked at their web site and must admit they looked nice, but, without a haylard (nice not needing one) are they vounerable to a gust of wind.  At $100+ I wouldn't want to come back to the boat in the dink and see it gone to Davey Jones locker.

Hello fellow 34'ers:

After this weekend and baking in the entire boat Sat night at Nicolet Bay in Door County I looked with envey thoughts of pillaging a couple fellow sailers crossed my mind as I saw their boats with these wind scoops in their forward hatches.

Which one is better?

Windscoop be Davis......

I look forward you any owner comments

Thanks for the suggestions.  I will probably take the slow, methodical approach to this. I'll try isolating the wire from the shorepower receptacle to the panel and check it then.  A friend told me he thought I might have a ground fault but all my outlets are downstream from two GFI's.  The AC wiring looks rather intense compared to my last two boats (and the last was a 3270 StinkPotter) so I will have to study the manuals schematics (another weak suit of mine.)  I know the inverter works fine for my 110V AC fridge under the nav station as well as handle my flatscreen and DVD.  The PO hard wired the micro in the Starboard outlet circuit so I may just find the wire and put a plug on it.  I'm still hopeful to make my plan work.  I'm still happy with the simplicity and low cost of my venture.  Every now and then I get a little epiphany on how to do something different.

Main Message Board / Re: Cleaning cockpit cushions
July 06, 2012, 04:19:17 PM
It's been about 5 weeks since sailing my boat back from Lake Huron to Green Bay with two days of solid rain, 48 degree water, 50 degree air, winds 25kts G 35-40Kts and seas to match.

Well, my cockpit cushions became soaked.  I don't know is they have totally dried out yet.  I don't know how old they are but when I went to the local shop and asked them to order closed cell foam for them, they said it isn't available.  Only some quick draining foam is.  Does anyone have a source for closed cell foam for cockpit cushions?

Thanks in advance
Steve

I tried to message you but don't think I did it right.

Just wondering, Did you get your boat from Coney's Marine on Long Island?

Tony, What I'm doing is much the same as you with your "double-male" cord.  Electricity flows like water, anyway it can.  The difference is that my cord goes from the inverter outlet (which is located where it isn't easy to reach) out to the Port coaming box.  There I put a female 30A end on it and plug that into the shore power entrance for the boat.  The reason I did this was to prevent the very issue you had happen.  If I plug in where the shore power does, then only one source can plug in at a time.  It has to be EITHER the shore power plug, or the inverter plug.

The problem is that, while the inverter works just fine for my shop vac, it alarms when I plug into the boat even before I turn on the main circuit breaker.  Last weekend I used it all weekend to power a small 110V AC fridge I have under the nav station and my TV with separate DVD all plugged into one power strip fed by the inverter.

But for some reason the inverter doesn't like plugging into the boat, hence the question, WHY?

Steve.

I just installed a 2000w inverter.  I plug it directly into the shorepower outlet instead of shore power thereby no chance of feedback and no switch needed.

This issue:
When I plug into inverter, then into the boat, the alarm on the inverter goes on and no output.  This, inspite of having the main AC switch turned off and all breakers turned off.  Inverter works fine with cord and adapter then a shopvac running but goes in alarm when plugged into the boat without any load.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello All,
Newbie to the 34org here.  I'm one of the few ac-dc boaters having gone from sail to sail to power to sail to power, now back to sailing, my first love.
First boat, build a 26' Lugar, then went to a 27' Catalina.  Next was a 30' Sea Ray Sedan Bridge, then back to sailing with a 31' Allmand.  Then back to power with a 32' MotorYacht and now back to sailing with a 1989 34 Catalina.
I'm considering adding Adler/Barbour system to my 1989 34.  I've only seen one other 34 with refridg unit and it was located directly below the oven.  Is this the prime location for the unit to install?
I'm also considering reverse cycle A/C, any suggestions on where they are typically installed?
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance
Steve
