Main Message Board / Re: Wing Keels vs. Fin Keels

Remember that all boats are compromises. I am very happy with the extra cushion the wing keel gives when dropping the hook in a beautiful but shallow anchorage. The Long Island Sound runs very deep, but the rivers and inlets can be a problem. We love the wing.

Same on my 1990. I believe it is just mold from standing water, especially from the small part of the bilge forward of the mast.

I just did mine yesterday. Many pictures included on this site. After the first stanchion, the others went quicker and quicker. You are correct about the butyl getting harder to mold. It worked fine in 50 degrees and sunny, but by 4pm and getting chilly it was getting harder to work with. Good luck.

Welcome, Matt.
I use this website early and often. It has saved me countless hours AND dollars. And the critical upgrades are a must read. Welcome to the Catalina family and watch out for the Wednesday/Thursday noreaster.

Ron,
It was definitely great to watch. It's so different seeing the catamerans and crews of 5. I also liked the cutaways to two sloops beating through the harbor. On a different note, how is Dead Horse Bay as a cruising destination? I am in City Island and have only been down the Narrows to Sandy Hook. As our season comes to an end, nothing is better than dreaming about next year's cruises.

Topping off the transmission for the winter is low on my list of fun jobs. Does anyone else NOT fill the tranny to the top? Have you had any problems due to not filling it? I am thorough when winterizing, but don't need overkill.

Ron, I had a biradial laminate on my C&C and loved it. However, this set of sails has to last me a good number of yesrs (college tuition is rearing its head soon) so it's the performance dacron.

Glad to hear that about Kappa. That was the feeling I got talking to them. And it helps having the off-season discount. I was out singlehanded today and needed the extra cloth. I think the 150 is the way to go. Thanks for the input.

I considered a smaller head sail, but in the Long Island Sound we rarely get above 15 knots except in the fall. Summer is usually 5 -10 kts all day, and then a late day SW 10 - 15 for a couple of hours. Even when we take our two week cruise East to Block Island/Newport, we are rarely overpowered. I was watching the America's Cup races yesterday and can only dream about those kind of steady winds. Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Main Message Board / Kappa vs Doyle
October 07, 2012, 06:23:48 PM
I have a 1990 tall rig. Saved up as it's way past time for new main and 155 furling genoa. I am in City Island in the Bronx. I've narrowed my choics down to Kappa Sails or Doyle. I read many complimentary posts about the Kappa sails but they were from 2007 & 2008. My Doyle experience has been from repair work (the loft is next door to my boatyard). Any suggestions/comments?

Oops, too many hours on the water today. I meant the fresh water pump! But at least it was blowing 10 - 15 on Long Island Sound.

We we bought our Catalina (hull #1076) last year from a 6 '4' sailor . Needless to say, the dodger is very tall. When I need to see over the dodger, I stand on a pair of square throwable cushions to gain some extra height. And it's comfy on your feet.

Glad the second pump worked out, but next time you should check out a water pump from Kubota. It is the same pump as the one on the Universal. Last year, because of the tsunami in Japan, there wasn't a water pump to be had anywhere, and my sailing season eas in jeopardy. A kind secretary at one parts department turned me on to the Kubota sight. Also, it was about $80.

Those are the two I intend to do first. Thanks for the info. I love this site!

Ron,
I am going to rebed all my lifeline stanchions and shroud plates this fall. On the website you can order two rolls of 1/16" thick and 1/2" wide and  50' long. Is that enough for the job?
