Main Message Board / Rollstop hinges
March 08, 2004, 06:53:13 AM
Thanks to all for your info.  I was able to get up to the boat this weekend (unfortunately, a 2-hour drive)and check the hinges more closely, and yes, they must be rollstop hinges!  I'll be ordering the kit!

The forward hatch on our '89 Catalina has no mechanism to hold it open.  It is a Lewmar hatch with a smoked acrylic window.  The hinges look like regular hinges, rather than the rollstop hinges that you can get the replacement kit for. We have looked at different types of gadgets to hold it open and have looked at the rollstop hinge kit, but nothing we see looks like it would fit with our hatch.  It seems odd that the boat would have been made without some brace - the salon port has a telescoping brace that tightens at the desired opening, but it is a different design hatch than the forward one.  What does anyone with our vintage boat have?  For 2 seasons we have propped open the hatch with a "Wet Ones" container.  We may just have to get a new one this year in a different decorator color...
Thanks!

I believe the size is given in the original specs/manual that came with the boat.  If you do not have that, maybe it's posted elsewhere on this site.  We installed the A/B Cold Machine in our 1989 (#832) last summer after checking with David Graas at Catalina Yachts.  I think I remember the volume of our ice box is about 6 cu. ft. or less....better look it up.

I am also looking for screens and following this chain closely.  I couldn't find any suitable screens on the Sailnet web catalog, and the parts listed on the Lewmar website with the part number you are referring to looks just like my old screens, not like what Susie describes.  If anyone get this clarified, please share!
Thanks for all the info!

Main Message Board / Lightning damage?
July 21, 2003, 07:43:47 PM
While dodging most of the many storms hitting the Midwest the last couple of weeks, we were watching a storm from our boat in a port and lightning hit the shore just next to us.  It knocked out the fuel pumps on the fuel dock near us, but we thought we were ok.  The next day, we noticed our batteries were not charged well.  Since we were cruising and thought the batteries were ready to be replaced anyway, we replaced them and went on cruising (as usual, mostly motoring!).  Everything seemed fine till we came home and left the boat in port (on shore power) for 3 days (with refrig running).  Then the  new batteries were also low.  We think the TruCharge 20 3-bank charger may have gotten a power surge or something, and the instruction book suggests that there may be an internal fuse that should only be replaced by "an authorized service representative". Anyone have experience with this - is the fuse something we should try ourselves?

Thank you for the part numbers for the hand-held shower.  However, I can't call them up on the Grohe online catalog - it says "not found".  Is there another number or place to look them up?

Main Message Board / Sheet Bags (line bags)

We installed 8 little screw-in "buttons" with an attached loop that hangs the coiled lines, 4 on each side of the cockpit next to the companionway. Lines are kept neat, and provide a bit of "cushion" if you want to lay back against the cabin wall.  Don't kick me off the list, but we ordered them from Beneteau.

Chris and I have just received our C-34 patches from Catalina.Does anyone know if these are iron on before sewing or would contact cement be an option? Ben/Chris  ChriSea #832

We installed the Cold Machine in our '89 ChriSea last summer.  "We" (I offered my partner Ben moral support) built a platform on the hull pretty much in the center of the aft lazarette, because the p.o. had put a propane box on the starboard side.  We ran the tubing pretty much as Ron describes, going straight under the aft cabin bed and into the storage space under the little "bench" on the starbd side.  From there, through the wall, and behind the stove.  It reached......but there is no slack at all!  We debated about where to place the unit in the icebox, but the deciding factor was - as close as possible to the compressor!  The installation went well and we have been very pleased with the results.

Main Message Board / Mast down winter storage
August 25, 2002, 07:49:07 PM
Just learned that when our boat (ChriSea #832) is hauled out this fall we will have to de-mast for storage.  We had not expected this and it was a bit of a shock, but then we thought it might be a good opportunity for some special maintenance projects.  We need to re-bed chainplates, and I would think having the mast down would give a chance to allow for drying out and re-bedding.  Are there other things we should be thinking about checking/fixing while the mast is down?  Also should we expect any problems with de- masting and re-masting?
And lastly, I read in tech notes about using alcohol to help displace water that has leaked into the deck core before re-bedding chainplates.  How is this done?
Thanks to all.

Main Message Board / Reefing
July 03, 2002, 05:35:23 AM
While we're on the subject of reefing, our 89 Catalina 34 mainsail has 2 reef points and the jiffy reefing hardware, but no line.  What size and length line do I need?  Is there any way to use the 2 points without having seperate lines for each system?  Do you leave line threaded through the clues all the time?
Thanks!
