Main Message Board / Re: Boat Smell
October 20, 2013, 02:57:17 PM
Every boat I have ever been on has "boat smell" not a bad smell, just a boat smell.  I don't mean diesel, standing water, head or mold smell, just been closed up for a while smell.  We notice it most when we bring things home or leave them in the car.  We put bounce sheets inside all our cushions in the fall and spring, makes the boat smell fresh all the time.  Add two or three inside each cushion cover.

Hi Les, I have a fixed spinnaker pole from a Mark II and I live in barrie as well.

We use an adjustable Pole now with our asymmetric so I would like to sell the old one.

Call or text me at 705-794-3855

After 4 seasons I would agree the separator is not mandatory, I was never really sure how much oil was going to come out of the hose so I put the separator in.  I empty it once a year and it is around 1/3 full.  We motor around 30-40 hours per year.  I would suspect  some engines may vent more or less oil depending on the condition of the engine.  The couple of ounces of oil I drain could easy be consumed by the engine with no issues, but I don't regret putting in the separator.

this was our solution about four years ago and has worked well, no oil residue our engine issues so far.  the picture does not show it well but the line from the separator goes into the k&N air filter.

Hey Fred, the only switch I had under the desk was for the windlass.  The forward panel (not shown in pic) stops about for inches from the settee back, the same thickness as the cushion back.  So I can reach in and get to the windlass breaker and it also created a perfect little opening for a folded chart.  Did not plan that but it worked out great.  I will take a pic from forward of the station and post.

Main Message Board / Stoage under nav station

In our never ending quest to improve storage and stop stuff from ending up on the cabin floor I was inspired by a previous post where a member built drawers under his nav station.  Behind the door is a shelf in the middle.  The new built in cabinet makes the cushions a tight fit because they do extend under the desk slightly but they still fit.  The door size is 15 x 20 purchased from the discount pile at WM and the teak trim is from my hatch boards that I cut up. Made new hatch boards from PVC lumber ( great stuff to work with).  I still need to add a piece of trim to the bottom at the front so you can't see the little section of the old floor that was under the nav station.  Not a big deal just, just being picky.

A couple of options jump out to me.

1. add another thru hull
2. put a check valve on the sink drain
3.put a y valve on the sink drain sump pump line and choose which one you are going to use.  This is how the mk 11 are set up from the factory with the ice box drain and shower sump because they are connected to the same thru hull drain.  without this valve the pump would shoot the shower water into the fridge.

Main Message Board / Re: Oil pan, early MKII's

Hi Brian, like you I have considered figuring out a way to get my oil drain to the rear of the pan. Checking marine deisel direct the price of the 35B oil pan is $450, so that won't be an option for me unless I could source the kubota equivelent for much less.  I think the easier solution would be to drop the pan (looks like there is enough room) and have a new fitting brazed on and to plug the old hole.

I am going to look at this option when we lay up the boat for the winter.

Hi Fred, you could always take a similar approach as the factory did under the v berth.  Looks like the just put one layer of fiberglass cloth over a "sticker" with the hull # and info on it.

I have considering registering our boat as well, two reasons, first I could take numbers off the bow and if I was to sell the boat I believe it would be a benifit to the new owner from a tax implication.  As you know when you sell a boat in ontario when the new owner goes to licence it they pay 13% in tax.  It is my understanding this does not happen when ownership changes when you register the vessel.  Are you aware if this is correct.

I can't remember if I measured in us or canuck gallons, I used the same bucket to measure both and the old was 13 and the new 29.

Tony, new tank works great and with the water levels so low in Georgian bay we have lost access to two the locations we used to pump out so the big tank is more needed then ever.  The pictures I posted last year did not have the premium hose or larger vent hooked up but I made that change near the end of the season.

Hi, not sure if I dumb or compulsive but I did the same thing a couple of years ago when I pulled my holding tank out and had a new 29 gallon one made.  The thread including pictures is on the site.

I have a Raymarine C80 with navionics silver great lakes charts, and a 24 inch dome 4KW radar removed from a customers boat for sale.  Unit works perfect and shows very little wear.  Included is 5 meter radar cable, gps antenna and cable, power cable, cover, and most of the manuals.  Any sailboat application would require a longer radar cable (around $175) to install.

$800.00 or best offer.

I would not worry about the angle or length of the vent hose run ( sorry peggy) as long as you don't have any low spots where "stuff" can collect I believe you will be good. Air only moves in one direction unless you move it mechanically, from high pressure to low pressure.  considering the pressure involved friction loss and bends should not make any difference.

I think I understand now, you are refering to the check valve in the pump.  I thought you meant the check valve on the cold water supply installed just prior to the tank.
