Main Message Board / Head replacement - electric

This may have been reviewed before but since search is not working I will ask.  Has anyone replaced manual head with electric on 1991 series boat.  Seen several on Mk II but I think the hull slope and foot print are different.  I want to do "drop in" replacement on existing bolts without a lot of fabrication work.  On the lake, using holding tank only, either current sea water inlet or water tank fed set up.  Waste line currently goes off bow side of toilet through wet locker to holding tank. Looking for experience, brand, model, effort etc.    thanks

Been a while since I have been on the board but anyway, I have old Mermaid 16,000 dual cycle (1993 I think) located under v-berth.  I rerouted the intake lines from PO that was using inlets under galley.

I am using the unused waste outlet (we are inland water only) on port side, placed Mermaid water pump under settee right at inlet but actually ran the raw water line from seacock to bilge where I placed the sea strainer and then back to the mermaid pump and then up to v-berth.  Placing the strainer in the bilge make for easy checking and easy cleaning.  I also rerouted my water cooled reffer raw water filter to same location in bilge.  I usually just open filters and and use the rushing raw water to help clean the screens, etc.  This also gives the bilge pump a little workout while I am on site.

Condensation is handled by an old Home Depot home A/C condensation trap and pump.  I have the output for this routed into the chain locker, not in the bilge.  The PO installed this pump back in 93 and it still works just fine, never any spillage inside the boat.  Output for Mermaid is port side above water line under v-berth.  Condensation line was not routed to this output due to backflow pressure from mermaid would flood the condensation trap.

I use single line reefing also using the Block at the cringle originally.  I have mentioned in a couple of other posts on mainsail suppliers that Kappa Sails did a great job repairing my main when it tore in a reefing setting. 

The SS ring used to attach the block at the cringle MUST BE LARGE!!  I used a ring that was larger that the cringle by the width of the ring on both sides - probably 3/8" larger.  The ring pulled through the cringle under stress and that lead to the sail tear!  The cringle is softer and can distort under load and out pops the ring.  Interestingly, the cringle returned back to its orginal shape and of course, the SS ring still looked new???  I don't use the ring/block any longer (gun-shy) but if you use, get a "larger than you think you need ring"!

Still have success with single line reefing back to the cockpit sans the block.

I got this from Ken Morton several years ago.  I tune to these settings and have no problems.  I have Mark 1 1/2, standard rig, high split for referernce.

I am very pleased with Kappa for my main.  Love the added roach toward the top!  Price was good with all the bells and whistles and service is supurb.  I had a reefing accident (my fault) on third use, sent sail back to Kappa and within two weeks it was was repaired and on its way back to me.  Repair cost was surprsingly low for what I did (under $150) and most sailors don't even realize the sail was torn unless I point out the new seams.   :clap

Smokey (female) is a short leg Jack Russell that is very sure footed on deck.  She cannot go below or come up due to her short legs and an old hip injury.  But she loves to sail with us, is an "alpha" personallity so she thinks she rules the dock and the lake.  Her bark can be sharp and sometimes anoying  but she is great!  Where else can you find a crew memeber with such good table manners??

I installed the longer bow roller from Catalina Direct couple of years ago after I was hit on the orginal roller.  I filled all the orginal holes with white epoxy and drilled all new holes (by the way, even though the roller was bent, there were no stress cracks around any of the bold holes!!).  The longer roller does have more holes.  Main thing I wanted the longer roller for was to be able to 1), move a little further out from bow, and mainly 2), be able to set the roller deeper in the "slot".  This provided more coverage over the fiberglass toward the back of the anchor to eliminate chipping from the anchor and chain and makes the installaion much more "beefer"  by setting it deeper.

I also used SS carriage bolts - made intallion MUCH easier - only needed to torque the nuts.  Also used bed of 4200.

Two additional points, I did tie string to tools (and subseqeuently dropped them) and watch out for the old backling plate - it can make it's way to the deep dark bow depths when you are takinng off the old roller.  I found mine about a year later.

I have 16,000 BTU reverse cycle heat /cool by Mermaid on a MKI  The unit was installed in 1993 and has been running ever since.  I run year round.  I use the maserator thru hull point for water input to pump.  Since boat is inland, no need for the thru hull for discharge.  I located the sea strainer in the bilge just so it is easy to clean without closing the sea cock.  Also give the bilge pump a chance to cycle when I do the cleaning.  Unit is located under V-Berth.  Air intake is under v-berth drawer.  Vents are in v-berth and salon.  None in aft cabin but we don't use any way.  Fans are in Aft cabin.

As an aside, I have always mounted the latest and greatest filter on my faucet head and I do drink the water from the tanks - we have clean city water at our marina.  But I still like to periodiaclly  clean the tanks as they are only full for short period of time and there is always oxigen at top of tanks and that can lead to unplesent things.

I have order some o fthe good stuff so we will see.  Makes sence to me.

Jon, concerning your dry hydrogen peroxide rinse.  Other than the cleaning porcess, how much rinsing etc to get any taste out of the new water?  I have used a small amount of bleach in the tank before and had to do at least a couple of fill and rinses to remove the "taste".  Tha is a lot of water down the drian.  Plus the time to do it.  Your thoughts.

Larry, Catalina installed propane bottles in the port locker of the Mark 1.5's are enclosed and vented to the stern.  The starboard locker (I also have hooks for lines and fenders and buckets) is really large and deep but the opening is only about 14" square - you can't put too much in there other than what I mentioned.  And you have to be carefull with any lines. etc. because of the steering cable system.

Not exactly sure if your boots are same style as mine but I use UV protected plastic cable ties - the ones with the one way slip lock.  I have had them on for at lest 3-4 years now.  The ones I replaced were just regular cable ties and had been on boat about 8 years or more.  And the boat is in GA so we get plenty of heat and UV.

Dan, I am not the expert as you will find out from others, but the fact the engine is running up to 3200 rpm, I assume out of gear, is normal.  You pretty much cannot over rev the engine as the design will self limit.  Your RPM of 2200 at 6.5 knots has to do with your prop pitch.  I definitely am out of my league here but prop pitch effects the maximum RPM the engine will achieve and of course determines either the "low end power" or "top end speed" of the boat.

Others can give you more intelligent answers but pushing along at 2200 and getting 6.5 sound nice to me.  I have to turn 3000 on flat water to achieve the same but the boat has great low speed torque in tight places.  Not sure of my prop pitch - maybe some day if we ever get enough water in the lake to haul again I will find out.   :donno:
